International Volunteering Service (SVI) is a Belgian pluralistic youth organization run by and for young people, by and for volunteers. Apolitical and non-religious, SVI is opened to all and everyone, without discrimination of nationality, philosophy, financial resources, education or sexual orientation. SVI is registered in Belgium as a non-profit organization.

The association mainly works in the field of international volunteering, but also in the areas of youth exchanges and intercultural exchanges between young Europeans and the rest of the world.

The origins of SVI

International Volunteering Service, which was founded in August 2009 in Belgium, is a partner organization of the Vietnam Solidarités Jeunesses (SJ Vietnam). SJ Vietnam is an international youth NGO that was established in 2004 in Ha Noi with the support of United Nations Volunteers (UNV) and the Belgian Cooperation.

Pierre De Hanscutter, a former Associate Expert of the UN and of the Belgian Technical Cooperation, is the co-founder and president of SJ Vietnam and founder of SVI.

SVI is recognized as "youth organization" by the Belgian French Community Government  and has partnerships with many international volunteering organizations and NGOs in over 70 countries. Each year, SVI sends around 400 young volunteers abroad from 2 weeks to few months.

In July 2009 a group of young Belgians voluntarily worked together to create and promote the organisation.  Thanks to the commitment, enthusiasm and ambition of its members, the organization was then founded !

In summer 2010, SVI Belgium sent more than 300 Belgian volunteers abroad and hosted more than 100 international volunteers in Belgium.

In 2012 and 2013, we send around 450 volunteers each year.

In 2012, a group of french volunteers started to create a branch of SVI in France.

The organization aims at generating young people interest (from 18 to 30 years old) in international volunteerism. One of its goals is also to promote citizenship, solidarity and mobility among young European as well as between young European and young people from other parts of the world. SVI tries to make international volunteering accessible to all and to raise awareness about the danger and misleading role of humanitarian tourism (voluntourism).
