About the local hosting organization
Our partner organization in this country was founded in Guatemala in 2005 by former international volunteers who wanted to offer flexible and impactful volunteer programs in Central America. This flexibility allows participants to commit for a duration that suits them, in a field where their skills can provide the most support. This approach helps create a positive impact for local communities and a rewarding experience for the volunteer.
The organization is guided by the principle that every contribution, no matter the size, can make a meaningful difference. Years later, they continue to collaborate with key local projects to foster strong, self-sufficient communities. By joining one of their programs, you are taking a step towards supporting sustainable community initiatives and engaging in an authentic cultural exchange.
The mission of our local partner is to strengthen human resources through volunteer programs, educational travel, and internship placements. They provide opportunities for students and professionals to gain valuable experience in their chosen field by matching them with the most suitable projects available.
Presentation of the program
The volunteer works hand in hand with the local staff, providing essential support while fostering a mutual exchange of skills. The goal is not to replace local stakeholders, but to strengthen their capacities and contribute to the long-term sustainability of their initiatives. This close collaboration is the key to responsible and effective volunteering.
This sustainable agriculture volunteer program in Guatemala offers the opportunity to contribute to a meaningful cause while developing skills in food production. The volunteer works alongside the project team and local farmers to promote efficient and environmentally friendly farming practices. The objective is to help small and medium-scale farmers overcome the challenges they face through training and education.
The volunteer is expected to:
- Participate in greenhouse training;
- Raise awareness about the responsible and efficient use of fertilizers;
- Lead educational classroom activities;
- Conduct case studies for small-scale farmers;
- Carry out research on market trends;
- Teach new sustainable farming methods;
- Support small farmers in applying for educational grants.
About the accommodation
To ensure a full cultural immersion, volunteers stay with carefully selected local host families. This is a unique opportunity to experience daily Guatemalan life, practice your Spanish, and form lasting connections. You will typically have a private room and share common areas and bathroom facilities with the family. All host families are experienced in welcoming international volunteers and provide a safe and friendly environment.
About the food
Host families generally provide two meals a day (breakfast and dinner), Monday through Saturday. This is a wonderful chance to savor authentic Guatemalan cuisine, which is flavorful but not typically spicy. You can expect to enjoy staples like black beans, corn tortillas, and eggs, as well as traditional dishes like pepián (a rich chicken stew) and tamales. The country is also famous for its excellent coffee and abundance of fresh tropical fruits. Special dietary requirements can often be accommodated if communicated in advance.
About the location
Projects are primarily located in and around Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage city nestled in a highland valley between three volcanoes. Famous for its well-preserved Spanish Baroque architecture, cobblestone streets, and vibrant cultural scene, Antigua serves as an excellent base for volunteers. This location allows for meaningful project work while providing access to the rich history and traditions of Guatemala. By working here, you contribute to communities striving for better opportunities in education, health, and economic stability.
About the leisure
During your free time, Guatemala offers countless adventures. You can explore the historic churches, ruins, and bustling markets of Antigua. For the more adventurous, hiking an active volcano like Pacaya or the challenging Acatenango offers breathtaking views. Weekend trips are popular to the stunning Lake Atitlán, surrounded by volcanoes and traditional Mayan villages, or to the magnificent ancient Mayan ruins of Tikal, deep in the jungle. Many volunteers also choose to take Spanish lessons, which are widely available and affordable.
