About the local hosting organization
Fundación VASE (Voluntariado para la Ayuda Social del Ecuador) is a non-profit organization, created in 2008. We work to strengthen intercultural relations, promote volunteer social aid and inspire the commitment of a global citizenship.
We believe in a world full of solidarity, social and personal development, as well as respect for diversity. Through volunteering we build new generations with values dedicated to improving global social conditions.
Fundación VASE is the only member in Ecuador of the ICYE (International Cultural Youth Exchange) federation. ICYE is an international non-governmental organization with more than 70 years of experience in promoting youth activity and global citizenship. Today ICYE is a federation with more than 40 national committees in America, Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania.
Presentation of the program
Aims of the project:
Following fair trade philosophies, principles, and conditions, Faire Collection is a social business which produces handmade artisan jewelry from natural materials, such as palm tree seeds. They have a strong focus on design and fashion, and all their products are made by hand by local women. The mission of the business is to provide work and social security for a marginalized population, and also offer scholarships for local artisans. The majority of their artisans are from the indigenous Kichwa communities.
Project´s activities:
Artisans work together in the workshop to make locally designed and inspired jewelry for international clients, using natural materials.
Volunteer´s tasks:
The work schedule is Monday-Friday from 9am to 6pm, with an hour for lunch. They are based out of a small workshop where the artisans and admin staff work. Depending on the skills and interests of the volunteer, their tasks can include:
- Product design (fashion design)
- Production quality control
- Product photography
- Photography of the artisans and the workshop
- Interviews with the artisans and creation of social media stories
- Development of social impact metrics
- Workshop production assistance
- Analytical processes and workflows (Excel documents, prices, inventory, etc.)
About the location
Otavalo is a small and very pretty town populated also by indigenous people. It is a city that is characterized by its culture and the commercialization of handicrafts.
Requirements
Any gender, any age. Minimum 3 month commitment. Volunteers need to have at least a base level of Spanish, med-advanced is preferred. Skills such as photography, fashion design, or business management are highly desirable. The volunteer must be flexible to support in different areas of the business.
Extra information
Participation fees from January 2025 to May 2026 :
- 4 weeks: 500 €
- Add 125 € for each additional week.
