About the local hosting organization

SJ Vietnam is an NGO that promotes values of solidarity, peace, and tolerance through civic projects aimed at improving society, both during and after volunteer work. It was founded in 2004 under the leadership of young international and Vietnamese volunteers. SJ Vietnam is an independent branch of SVI, a full member of CCVIS (Coordination Committee for Volunteer Service – UNESCO), NVDA (Network for Volunteering Development in Asia), and is also a partner of YAP (Youth Action for Peace) and the Alliance (Volunteering in Europe). It is an independent, apolitical, and non-religious organization open to all, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, philosophy, financial resources, education, or gender.

Presentation of the program

Ky Quang Orphanage is run by Ky Quang Pagoda, which was built in the early part of the 20th Century in 1924. The pagoda is now a place of charity for unlucky children and also helps treat diseases.
Now, the pagoda is taking care and bringing up more than 200 children in the South of Vietnam. Their ages ranges from 5 days old to 40 years old. 90 percent of these are orphans that are suffering from cerebral-palsy, blindness or Down’s syndrome, agent orange. The children here have unfortunate backgrounds as many have been abandoned by their parents and relatives. Every few months, monks find a new baby left in front of the
pagoda gate. The head monk sometimes receives phone calls from hospitals requesting him to take in abandoned babies. For now, about 30-40 local children have a chance to study at Ky Quang as some local teachers teach Vietnamese for them in the morning.
CVI is a learning center for disadvantage children, homeless children, those were born in poor family to have a chance to learn how to read and write in Vietnamese. That is the basic need for children as their age. Besides that, CVI provides opportunity for them to develop their life skills. At present the center has been accepted about 40 kids around the
area. We believe every child deserves an education, w empowers the next generation, to choose a world full of compassion.
Co May Dormitory was built on purpose of generating good condition for poor and good students. It provides free dorm and other facilities for students who are studying at universities located in Ho Chi Minh City. We believe that with support from Co May, the student will concentrate on studying to become good citizen then contribute in development of country.

Volunteers will spend time with the children to organize games and other activities for them, play with kid age from 3 to 5 years old, help the baby sister to take care of the children.
Volunteers will also do some manual work which benefits the project where the children staying, studying, such as help painting, classrooms, cleaning the area.
Volunteer will be asked to spend 2 hours to create an English speaking environment for youngsters at the host place.

Requirements

Water-resistant clothes, raincoat Laptop and pictures of your country. The
volunteer should be enthusiastic, optimistic, and ready to deal with differences, opened-minded, easy-going, patient and caring and eager to contribute to our community.
