About the local hosting organization
Buntaba Primary School is a community found project intergrated in the UVDA program sincewa 2014 supported under the voluntary service projects (Work camps and Mid/Long Term volunteering) with an aim to uplift the learning conditions of the school. The school has a first growing population of over 300 children with very poor sanitation facilities, unmotivated staff manpower to tend to this growing children population, the permanent structures available one of the roof was removed by the heavy down pours thanks to Leggart Trust for availing the top up funds on re roofing of the classroom block. The community around needs to be mobilized for them to take charge in the activities of the school as per the Universal Primary Education guidelines but also to ensure quality education for the local children attending classes in Buntaba Primary School.
Objectives:
The project aims to mobilise parents, local leaders, well wishers to raise awareness about the importance of education especially to the less privileged communities like Buntaba.
Presentation of the program
Activities of the volunteers:
- promotions of community work (mobilise community to get involved in the construction of a school kitchen)
- prepare and support outreach programs as regards to delivery of quality education to young people with emphasis to people with fewer opportunities
- setting up of green garden within the school using indigenous knowledge for demonstration purposes and in-house food production, delivery of climate change, hygiene, sanitation and basic health, and heritage conservation education to schools around.
About the accommodation
Participants will be accommodated on the school campus with options ranging from family host to hostel.
Note: Our partner may ask for your cooperation to adjust due to circumstance depending on the location and availability of a secure accommodation for the volunteer.
About the food
This is purely local cuisine and most of the food stuff is the locally available foodstuff per region of the project area. Volunteers are expected to eat Ugandan food and take turn cooking with local volunteer. Initiatives are welcome using the locally available foodstuff or products especially as regards to international dishes.
Here are several typical dishes from Uganda:
- Luwombo: chicken, beef or fish with vegetables, peanut sauce, all wrapped in plantain leaves during the cooking
- Posho: white corn flour mixed with boiling water until it turns into a smooth, doughy consistency. This is a dish to eat with soups or beans.
- Muchomo: various meats (chicken, pork, goat or beef) barbecued on a stick, often accompanied by roasted plantains
- Chapati: this is the bread of Uganda, it is like a thick salty pancake fried in little oil
About the leisure
The volunteers can experience the natural air and environment at its most.
In the capital Kampala, the volunteers will have the occasion to see and visit several places of interest:
- National Museum of Uganda
- Saint Mary’s Cathedral Rubaga
- Kasubi Tombs, UNESCO World Heritage Site (2001)
- Bakaba’s Palace
- many parks
Requirements
Motivation of the applicant and willingness to learn and share with others in an inclusive setting.
No smoking is allowed at work site.
What to bring: Volunteer can bring with them both warm clothing’s for the night and summer dressing not so reviling of his/her body. Teaching aid materials for young leaners. Working boots and clothes, medication and games which will encourage cooperation.
Meeting point
At point of entry/port in Uganda, Entebbe International Airport or Bus Terminal of your choice depending on your travel schedule. Please communicate your travel itinerary and we advise. So volunteers are encouraged to communicate/confirm their arrival at least a week before departure for proper preparations.
Extra information
Minimum stay for volunteers is 1 month and maximum 3 months open throughout the year.
A teaching background is an added advantage.
The fee for a period of 1 to 3 months is €450.
