About the local hosting organization
GAIA is an organisation dedicated to the culture of peace, social and environmental justice and sustainable living. Our mission is to work towards peace, social and environmental justice by being an example for alternative and regenerative ways of living. The main activities of GAIA are international volunteer programs, non-formal education and permanent community-based programs, in places which are facing different social or environmental challenges such as systemic discrimantion, social isolation and ethnicity based division.
GAIA has around 30 members from different communities and ethnic groups from all around Kosovo and abroad. Since 2014, GAIA is a full member of Service Civil International (SCI), a global volunteer organisation dedicated to promoting a culture of peace by organising international voluntary projects for people of all ages and backgrounds.
GAIA currently the following programs:
1. Permaculture and natural building program in Bozevce - aims to establish an estate based on permaculture ethics and principles which will be an inspiring example for social and environmental regeneration.
2. The Program of Mitrovica was founded in 2018 with the intent to work towards breaking down multiple barriers in an inert divided city.
3. Since 2016, we have been present in the Roma community in Gracanica, with the aim to empower the young members of the community so that they will believe in and fight for a better future.
Presentation of the program
This will be the 3rd summer that GAIA is organizing environmental summer camps for children from the local community. Ranilug is a rural municipality situated along Binačka Morava River, consisting of 13 villages, predominantly populated with the Serbian minority. Children in Ranilug do not have many opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities, in particular about the environment or nature. Our summer camps provide a unique opportunity for around 40 children to learn about nature and environmentally responsible behaviour. The activities include diverse outdoor workshops on biodiversity, camping, orientation and so forth. Free time is used for sports, games, art and excursions to the mountains. There will be two age groups (7 to 10 and 11 to 14), each in the camp for 5 days.
Activities are taking place from 9 am to 4 pm, children sleep at home. One or two overnight might be organised with the older group if they show interest.
About the accommodation
Volunteers will be accommodated at GAIA’s property in Bozevce village. The accommodation is organized in a house with 4 rooms, bathroom, small kitchen and composting toilets. Transport to the location where the activities will take place will be organised every day. Volunteers will spend around 7 hours at the venue of the environmental camps. During activities we will arrange two meals for volunteers and children. Other meals will be prepared by the volunteers and GAIA staff in Bozevce. Food will be vegetarian/vegan. Volunteers should take sleeping bags for 1-2 nights of camping with children.
About the leisure
Four preparation days will take place at the beginning of the project. It will include information on local context, plan and methodology, lessons learnt and in-depth presentation of the activities. Volunteers will be supported by experienced educators in preparation and realisation of activities. Activities will always be run in teams. In general, volunteers will also learn about local nature, as well as about challenges and threats to it.

The Participant profile: Volunteers should have some experience in organizing educational activities with children or youth. They should have good communication skills, good knowledge of English and at least basic understanding of non-formal and outdoor education.
