About the local hosting organization
Naturland - Verband für ökologische Landbau e.V. was founded in 1982 in Gräfelfing near Munich with the aim of promoting organic farming regionally and worldwide. The purpose and task of Naturland is to protect our environment and the preservation of the natural living conditions through ecological and sustainable methods in all areas of agriculture. Naturland promotes the science and the practical application of ecological processes in agriculture, forestry and all areas of the production of food and natural products, develops them further and monitors their practical implementation. On the consumer side, Naturland deepens the knowledge on the contents and objectives of organic farming and promotes ecological nutrition and environmentally friendly behaviour. The association takes a firm stance against racist and xenophobic activities and other discriminatory and contemptuous behaviour. We also take a stand against any activities which could indicate any connection of the organic food industry with extremist ideas. Initially focused on the region, the association expanded its field of activity in 1987 and intensified its international commitment in cooperation with GEPA (Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Partnerschaft mit der Dritten Welt). Currently, there are over 67.000 Naturland farms all over the world, cultivating according to the Naturland standards, more than 3.700 of them in Germany. Organic agriculture, as practised according to the Naturland standards, is based on a holistic, system-oriented approach. The Naturland standards cover areas which are not governed by the EU organic regulation, such as social standards.
The main target groups of Naturland are farmers, consumers and the general public.
Regular activities:
• elaboration of standards for organic agriculture,
• certification of farmers and processors,
• public relations and consumer outreach,
• policy support for our farmers (regional, national, EU and international level)
• promotion of
o research and science in organic agriculture,
o education and training in the field of organic agriculture and
o education at schools and other educational institutes
• cooperation on development aid policies, particularly concerning the improvement of fair and social conditions in agriculture and trade
• cooperation with other associations whose purpose is care and use of our natural basis of life in a responsible manner or the protection of our environment.
Naturlands holistic perspective also includes the social interaction with all who are involved in working with Naturland certified farms and companies. That is why since 2005 all Naturland members are operating according to Naturland social guidelines. Naturland also has additional fair standards, build on the three cornerstones fair prices, reliable trading relationships and social responsibility.
Presentation of the program
