About the local hosting organization

Lyhty ry is a non-profit association founded in 1993. Lyhty ry's ethical goal is to promote the well-being of developmentally disabled individuals, their families, and the whole society. Lyhty ry organises accommodation and housing services, a learning environment for young adults, inclusive work and day activities in textile, outdoors, culture, café, media, music and general workshops, events, and cultural and recreational activities. Lyhty ry examines and modifies its activities in order to reach its ethical goal, and is therefore an innovative and active participant in social development. Lyhty has received approximately three volunteers per year for over 20 years. We expanded our volunteering programme in 2020 by receiving 10 volunteers every year from all over Europe through the European Solidarity Corps programme. The aim of Lyhty's volunteer project is to improve the status of developmentally disabled people in our society, promote understanding and solidarity between different cultures, and offer the volunteer an opportunity to learn about care work. Working with Lyhty often affects your value system and might clarify your future plans. Many volunteers become interested in care work, particularly in the field of developmental disabilities. At the same time, the organisations participating in the initiative devote a great deal of time, energy and resources to set up a high-quality activity; they should therefore expect that European Solidarity Corps participants show a similar level of respect for the local communities and the people that are directly concerned by the activities (https://youth.europa.eu/solidarity/mission_en).
