About the local hosting organization

--- ICJA Freiwilligenaustausch weltweit e.V. was founded as a reconciliation program between the USA and Germany in 1949. Today ICJA organizes volunteer exchange programs all over the world and the current management has long-standing experience in working with volunteers and partner organizations from over 40 different countries on all continents. ICJA is an independent, non-profit registered association recognized by the German government. Our aim is to facilitate respectful and open interaction between people from different cultures and backgrounds. We understand our exchange programs as educational offers, which allow people to meet at the same level, to work together and to learn from each other. Anyone who supports the aims of ICJA is invited to become a member and volunteer coworker. The main office of ICJA is located in Berlin where currently about 30 staff and 3 apprentices and 3 volunteers are working. A very important part of the work is done by voluntary coworkers in regional and local committees all over Germany ICJA's main projects and programs focus on peace work, intercultural education and the promotion of active citizenship, global learning and social commitment. ICJA received the QUIFD certificate for »Quality in Voluntary Service« which is based on ten carefully defined quality aspects. ICJA coordinates and carries out a variety of exchange programs for volunteering, like the ESC (former European Voluntary Service), the IJFD (International Youth Voluntary Service), the BFD (Federal Voluntary Service), "weltwärts" (sending and receiving to/from countries in the Global South), volunteer exchange programs within the framework of our umbrella organization, the "ICYE Federation", the program for volunteers of all ages above 26 (Ü26) and the organization of about 17 workcamps each year in Germany. The ESC volunteers will first learn about ICJA's programs and the work processes and tasks in different departments. Then, they will be assigned to one of the ICJA departments, taking into account their interests and abilities: Hosting of international volunteers in Germany, Sending of volunteers abroad, “Sawa” Federal Voluntary Service with refugees, Public Relations or ESK area.

Presentation of the program

Kreisau Initiative develops educational programmes for young people and education professionals with the aim of strengthening democracy and sustainability in Europe. Its work focuses on three core areas: contemporary history and human rights, inclusion, and social‑ecological transformation. The project community concentrates on innovative education in the field of social‑ecological transformation, especially on climate disinformation, the energy‑security nexus and polarisation in climate communication. The volunteer mainly supports the department of social‑ecological transformation by helping to design, organise and implement youth exchanges and training courses, researching and networking with partner organisations, promoting activities via social media and partner networks, and assisting at international events. Tasks also include developing own training sessions, preparing seminar materials, communicating with participants and partners, and supporting general administrative work.

About the accommodation

Because of the housing shortage in Berlin it is very important that you are flexible about the accommodation: The coordinating organization will provide a shared apartment in Berlin. A commute to work that takes up to 60 minutes is normal in Berlin. The pocket money will be paid in monthly payments. The volunteer will receive a monthly food fee. Financial support to the travel costs from his/her place of origin to Germany and back depends on the distance travelled. The volunteer will also be reimbursed for the costs of a monthly public transport ticket.

About the leisure

There is an English-speaking mentor who is responsible for answering any questions and supervising the work of the volunteer. The volunteer can take part in the regular training for staff members and will attend an on-arrival and a mid-term seminar.

Extra information

The project is implemented under the European Solidarity Corps Programme, financed by the European Commission.
The participating organisations have to be mindful of these needs as they are responsible for providing a respectful and trusting hosting environment. At the same time, the organisations participating in the initiative devote a great deal of time, energy and resources to set up a high-quality activity; they should therefore expect that European Solidarity Corps participants show a similar level of respect for the local communities and the people that are directly concerned by the activities (https://youth.europa.eu/solidarity/mission_en).
