Presentation of the program

During this activity, the volunteer will offer support and empowerment services to Unaccompanied Minors and will complement and flourish the services already offered to them by the staff of the Semi-Autonomous Living Units run by KEAN in Athens, such as daily tasks and workshops on budgeting, housekeeping, nutrition and health, mobility in the city etc. to facilitate their semi- independent living and slowly prepare them for their “exit” to a completely independent life. KEAN also aims to protect and empower the UAMs, to safeguard their fundamental rights and to promote their smooth inclusion into the local society. The activity will offer you the opportunity to support a particularly vulnerable social group, to contribute to their social inclusion and empowerment, and to sensitize other people. Our intention is UAMs to see volunteers as friends and together to create an international pals’ team in which everyone is equal and together will bring social change.

About the accommodation

KEAN is responsible for fully covering the cost of your accommodation. The volunteer will stay in a shared fully equipped apartment in the center of the city of Athens which meets the required standards of hygiene and safety and has all the necessary equipment (home appliances, furniture, heating, household appliances, sheets, blankets etc.), it provides easy access to the public transportation and has access to the Internet, in order to promote and facilitate the communication of the volunteer with both their family and our organization.

About the leisure

You will hold meetings with the KEAN staff and your supervisor for monitoring the implemented interventions and you will get all the needed training on activity’s ethical, no harm codes and on sensitive issues when working with vulnerable people and guidance for the completion of activities including (depending on your interests and skills) such as music, theatrical, cultural and educational workshops, exhibitions, events and excursions. The final aim of all the activities is to empower both the beneficiaries and the volunteers and to create a social impact in local and European society.

At the same time, the organisations participating in the initiative devote a great deal of time, energy and resources to set up a high-quality activity; they should therefore expect that European Solidarity Corps participants show a similar level of respect for the local communities and the people that are directly concerned by the activities (https://youth.europa.eu/solidarity/mission_en).
