About the local hosting organization
Caritas Vlaanderen covers the Flemish dioceses of Belgium and belongs to the worldwide Caritas network of Caritas Internationalis of the Roman Catholic Church.
Caritas Vlaanderen is a social non-profit organization, rooted in Christian tradition, that focuses on poverty reduction, supporting people in vulnerable situations, promoting (qualitative) voluntary engagement and pastoral and spiritual care in the field of health and well-being. We are actively contributing to a warmer society which is based on love for all human beings, especially for people in vulnerable situations and poverty, where everyone can exploit their rights and where everyone gets a chance to participate in all one’s freedom and responsibility.
We attain our goals by informing and sensitizing the greater public, calling for solidarity and just societies, advocating for more human policies and supporting specific projects in the field. We accompany people in vulnerable situations to find answers to their needs. We support other health care and welfare providers and organisations through our funding programme or by providing tools and training sessions to help them increase their impact. We sensitize youth groups by facilitating social summer camps with other Caritas organisations worldwide. Through our advocacy team, we also try to weigh on policies and decision making processes that affect people in vulnerable situations.
In Belgium, Caritas Vlaanderen not only connects local Caritas organisations, but also collaborates with an ever wider network of humanitarian or welfare organisations and action groups on the field, in the Church and the Christian community as in the wider society.
Presentation of the program
Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of children? Do you want to be part of meaningful projects that provide educational opportunities to the most vulnerable? Join Caritas Vlaanderen and help us bring learning and joy to the children of traveling families!
About the projects
Caritas Vlaanderen provides a "reference address" for +-300 travelers in Belgium for accessing official services. Due to their nomadic lifestyle, many children from these communities have no access to education. That is where you come in!
Our "Spelcaravan" and "Family Following" projects offer educational and fun activities for children. These activities take place on private and passing terrains across Belgium. As a volunteer, you will prepare and organize activities in French (reading, writing,...), math, and other subjects, playfully helping children develop essential skills. Since volunteers go to the families' homes, you will move around regularly in Belgium.
About the accommodation
What do we offer?
- Accommodation: Private room in a shared apartment in Brussels.
- Financial support: Pocket money and food allowance provided at the beginning of each month.
- Transport: All travel expenses related to volunteering will be reimbursed.
About the leisure
Besides financial support, you will receive...
- Training: You will receive specific training to learn about the culture of the Roma and travelers, as well as various topics related to the Caritas community. You will also be introduced to our other projects and participate where possible.
- Gratitude and the best colleagues
