About the local hosting organization

AFS is one of the oldest youth exchange organizations world-wide, founded as a volunteer ambulance service in 1914. The ambulance drivers initiated youth exchange activities after the First World War to help to develop the knowledge, skills and intercultural understanding needed to create a more peaceful world, starting with scholarships for university students. After the Second World War AFS decided to arrange the exchange of younger participants, and started High School based exchange programs. Today AFS consists of a word wide network of independent AFS organizations in over 60 countries. Their main activities include High School based exchanges and international voluntary service, internships and other intercultural activities. AFS is a non-profit organization, registered at the national register of associations. All our programs are partly organized by staff members from the national office in Hamburg and three regional offices in Stuttgart, Wiesbaden and Berlin (in total 90 staff members), together with our national volunteers (in total 3.400 national volunteers), which are organized within national, regional and local working groups (around 100 local chapters all over Germany).

Extra information

The project is implemented under the European Solidarity Corps Programme, financed by the European Commission.
The participating organisations have to be mindful of these needs as they are responsible for providing a respectful and trusting hosting environment. At the same time, the organisations participating in the initiative devote a great deal of time, energy and resources to set up a high-quality activity; they should therefore expect that European Solidarity Corps participants show a similar level of respect for the local communities and the people that are directly concerned by the activities (https://youth.europa.eu/solidarity/mission_en).
What do we provide ?
  • Training before and after the project
  • Health insurance during your project
