About the local hosting organization

Siauliu Didzdvario Gymnasium is a municipal budgetary establishment performing programs in comprehensive, secondary and adapted comprehensive, secondary formal education, International Baccalaureate (since 2005), non-formal adult education and in-service training programs. Our Gymnasium is a member of the UNESCO net of associated schools, association of socially responsible schools (SAMA). Moreover, it offers social educators, career consultant's services, non-formal education (activities in sports, arts, dancing, radio, year book, school newspaper, and so on). There are 600 students and 70 pedagogues in the gymnasium. Our Gymnasium is famous in Siauliai city as a school which implements various international projects – as classes exchanges, youth exchanges and trainings for teachers. Gymnasium has the Department of the projects which cooperate with Non-formal education club "Radio club". We have a radio (FM) in our school. Non-formal education teachers of "Radio club" have a rich experience of organizing teamwork for international groups. "Radio club" and gymnasium Department of the projects cooperate closely in implementation of ESC projects. The main idea of having international volunteers in our school’s radio “Radio club” is intercultural learning during non-formal education. Also, to promote volunteering among our school youngsters and local community. Volunteers of our radio station search for information for their radio program, record radio, video shows, prepare questions for interviewers, create playlist and so on. Also, they visiting class hours: for discussions on different topics (youth policy, tolerance, refugees, integration, act.), presentations of their countries (it can be during Geography, English lessons), volunteering, workshops (math skills implementation during the project – as monthly budget planning). Watching short movies that need discussions; summer camps, youth exchanges where volunteers are responsible for team work – getting to know each other, team building games. Also, volunteers implement their initiatives.

Presentation of the program

Your main activity is going to be the work in the school radio station, about 60% of the time, and its purpose is to provide a platform for you to learn about the specifics of working in a radio, realize your creativity and ideas, possibilities to initiate projects within Radio club. Your main tasks will be preparation of radio shows, the topics cover EU citizenship, EU awareness and democracy, youth work, youth policies, youth interests and youth problems. At the beginning your task is to find a topic, then write a script, record, edit and put on the radio. You will also be included in the rest of the journalistic work of the schools: taking photos, working with and sharing them, writing articles for the school newspapers, the development of the year book. Outside of the radio club you can attend school events, after-school activities and support school stuff. All depending on your interests and abilities.

About the accommodation

Accommodation: The volunteer will live in an apartment, which will be rented for the project period. She/he will share apartment with other volunteers, but she/he will have her/his one room. Food: Nutrition issues will be solved by consensus, volunteer will be able to choose to eat independently or in the canteen (the school can offer breakfast and lunch). For free days and for dinner the volunteer will get money. With the money volunteer can eat outside or cook at the apartment. Local Transport: In case of need, the volunteer will be provided with public transport monthly ticket.

About the leisure

Before leaving your country, you are supposed to have a Pre-departure training. You will be told about your project, about European Solidarity Corps in general, who can help in the case of some problems, about your rights and insurance. You are going to have two trainings in Lithuania: On-arrival training usually takes place in the first month after your arriving and the Midterm in the middle of your project. During the trainings you have a chance to get deeper information about European Solidarity Corps, Youthpass, Lithuania; to meet other volunteers which is also VERY important.

Requirements

The Participant profile: During the volunteer selection the emphasis is put on volunteer’s motivation to conduct voluntary service in Lithuania, in particular within the theme of radio and school non-formal activities. Volunteers’ willingness to work with students and to cooperate with teachers are key. We also encourage creativity, initiative, interest in learning and personal development. The nationality and age of the Volunteer is not our main focus. We are open for co-operation and communication with any person that shows interests in our project activities.

At the same time, the organisations participating in the initiative devote a great deal of time, energy and resources to set up a high-quality activity; they should therefore expect that European Solidarity Corps participants show a similar level of respect for the local communities and the people that are directly concerned by the activities (https://youth.europa.eu/solidarity/mission_en).
