About the local hosting organization

BACKGROUND OF KYATUNE PRIMARY SCHOOL :

The school initially began in 1956 in a Church Compound (Kyatune G.N.C.A). It later relocated to its present location. It is a Public Mixed Day and Boarding Primary School sponsored by the County Education Board (Kitui County) Currently the school has 321 boys and 250 girls, and 10 male teachers and 12 female teachers. It hosts the newly established Kyatune Junior Secondary School. The school was started to impart knowledge to pupils which will enable them to face challenges of life effectively and to to educate pupils to be self-reliant

The school and the Community: Kyatune day and boarding Primary school and JSS is a Public school serving urban and rural communities in Kitui South. The school has attracted many pupils in the community due to its performance, good discipline and positive moral.
The school is a KNEC Examination Centre for both KCPE and KPSEA Since its establishment, the school has been performing very well, having produced several prominent personalities in Kenya and in the Eastern Region. In the last five years it has produced over six hundred learners who have joined National, Extra-County, County and sub-county secondary schools. Half of these have joined or have potential of joining Public universities and tertiary colleges.
The school has been participating in ball games, athletics and music festivals every year. It is a national figure in Volleyball featuring in national finals since 2015 up to date. In other ball games we have scooped several medals in the county and regional games.

Presentation of the program

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SCHOOL :

Teaching English language, computer skills, creative arts, participating in culture events, raise environmental awareness, planting of trees and transfer of seedlings, sports and games, theatre, computer lessons, basic education, workshops, Music and intercultural events, construction sites, making bricks, construction of classrooms and painting.

Volunteers will support the teachers and share culture and other activities in the classrooms in the morning. There will also be opportunity for sports and play with the children. In the afternoon volunteers will work with teachers, Teaching English, Assisting teaching in daily classes, Providing general care and assistance in looking after the children, this will involve playing games, teaching English as basic life skills.

About the accommodation

Volunteers will be accomodated by a host family or in hostels. Please note that you will share the typical living conditions of a Kenyan family. There will be electricity, and clean water.

About the food

During your stay on this project food will be provided by your host family, volunteer will be provided with three meals a day (break fast, lunch and dinner), food will be prepared by the host with the help of volunteers. Most foods are locally made and fresh produced.

About the location

The school is located in Kitui County, Mutomo Sub-county, Kyatune Location, and Kyatune Sub-location. It is one kilometer from Kyatune Market.

About the leisure

Leisure ideas for volunteers :

- Visit South kitui national reserve (which is located to the north of north of Tsavo national park), the reserve is frequented by wild animals that relocate to and from tsavo national park. Some of the animals that frequent the reserve include lions, elephants, giraffe, leopards and lesser kudu, it is a hidden game suitable for birds watching and adventure.

- Visit Nzambani Rock, a stone outcrop that is locally known as ivia ya nzambani, it is a popular attraction in kitui due to the myths that surround it. Locals believe that if you go round the rock seven times, your gender automatically changes. It is a perfect destination for hiking adventures and sightseeing.

- Visit the Mutomo Hill Plant Sanctuary. The sanctuary features over 100 species of indigenous trees and plants believed to have medicinal values. It is a nice place for bird watching, camping, picnicking and nature walks.

- Playing volleyball.

- Going to nearby hills to view the scenery.

Requirements

You'll need to meet certain requirements, including age, health, and attitude. You'll also need a passport and visa to enter the country.

1. Age: You must be at least 18 years old (if you are below 18 years you need written consent from a guardian), or the age required by your program ;

2. Language: You should be able to speak at least basic English, or the language required by your program ;

3. Passport: You'll need a valid passport to enter Kenya ;

4. Visa: You'll need a Single Entry Visa or tourist visa to volunteer in Kenya ;

5. Travel insurance: You'll need to have travel and health insurance ;

6. Background check: You may need to provide a criminal background check report ;

7. Vaccinations: You may need to get certain vaccinations before entering Kenya ;

8. Training: You may need to participate in training provided by your organization ;

9. You should also be open-minded, flexible, and patient, and willing to step outside your comfort zone ;

10. A positive attitude towards independent progress of others ;

11. A willingness to adapt to local conditions.

Meeting point

Arrival Terminal At Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Nairobi.

An orientation meeting will take place in Nairobi before proceeding to the project.

Day 1: Arrival and pick up from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, in Nairobi, Kenya and transfer to host family home or hostel.

Day 2: Morning: registration and start of orientation. About 4 hours lecture at the home of your host. Topics covered during orientation lecture will include East African culture, history, customs, politics, geography, and necessary health precautions, and various other topics, such as the diversity of Kenyan life. Afternoon is free for exploring rural Kenyan life and getting to know your host family.

Extra information

Additional requirements :

1. Some programs may have additional requirements, such as a registration fee or program fee ;

2. Medical volunteers may need to provide college enrollment documents ;

3. Volunteers working with children may need to provide a criminal background check report.

Participation fee : 400 Euros per months (12 months).

The project fee or extra fee includes : airport pick up, airport transfer, food, accommodation and host, transport from Nairobi to the project and back to Nairobi after the project, city tour, 2 days host in Nairobi on your arrival and last day after project, 24 hours Agape Centre Of Hope Office Support and project monitoring.

Project dates : Term 1 January to April, Term 2 May to August and Term 3 October to November.
