About the local hosting organization

This project actively contributes to SDG 15: Life on Land, and has been organized in collaboration with local NPOs — The Association to Protect Nature in Tondabayashi since 1999. In Japan, 67% of the land is covered by forests, and 40% of those are human-made, planted forests known as Satoyama. These areas traditionally provided essential resources such as food and materials for daily life. To preserve their biodiversity and natural functions—such as water regulation—Satoyama must be actively maintained. Our ancestors managed these forests in ecological and sustainable ways, but much of this stewardship has been lost due to modernization. Through this project, we aim to revive Satoyama with the power of global volunteerism! Most members of the local organizations are between 60 and 80 years old, and they greatly welcome the participation of young people and international volunteers to help energize and support their activities—both physically and mentally.
