About the local hosting organization
The best and largest modern library in Nepal is the Tribhuvan University Central Library, which was founded in 1959. It was named one of Asia's top libraries by the British Book Department Council in 1969. The library is also considered the largest in the Asia-Pacific area. It has over 400,000 resources, according to TUCL, including books and magazines from the 12th century as well as unique collections such as the Bibliotheca Himalayica.
The library attracts approximately 1500 general readers. Core readers include students doing research or authoring a book, as well as those studying for Public Service and government service exams. Any citizen of any country can join the library, which has a membership fee.
Unfortunately, the horrible earthquake that shook Nepal in 2014 badly damaged the library, killing over 8000 Nepalese people. The library's management committee is working hard to reorganize and reshape the space. However, the achievement is still insufficient and requires the help of volunteers from all over the world. You will be able to help rearrange the books in the library after joining this project.
Students at Tribhuvan University can now study foreign books online from the comfort of their own homes. Tribhuvan University's Central Library has started a free online library service for students. The library has set up a remote access system so that patrons can read books, documents, journals, and other materials online.
Students from other campuses and libraries linked with TU will be able to utilize the library's ProQuest database software to read books free.
Books, journals, articles, essays, and other works by internationally famous foreign scholars are included. Students must fill out a form on the library's website to read these resources free. The student will be given an email address based on the information provided.
PLEASE NOTE: As a volunteer, you are responsible for your daily transportation to and from your project site. Local bus rides are very affordable, and a one-way trip rarely costs more than Rs35(0.26 EUR). Taxis are more expensive, and costs vary based on distance travelled.
