About the local hosting organization

Wings of a dove community is a children’s initiative (CCI)registered by the Government under the ministry of East Africa Community, and social protection and also as a community-based organization(CBO).The institution is home to 77 plus orphaned and vulnerable children in our Ruai home of hope. The organization and families through integrated development program. We are located off kangundo road, opposite Ruai Health Clinic, Njiru Sub County, and Nairobi.
Wings of a Dove Community Centre, has facilitated the rehabilitation of vulnerable street children, neglected and abused children by building a community around them and encouraging close links among the vulnerable children and also between the outside stakeholder communities. We embrace a participatory approach in carrying out our activities as envisioned in the organizational purpose to carry out multifaceted project activities in terms of child rehabilitation and community development such as:

We are an active player in dealing with matters affecting children, youth and families on harmful drugs addiction, counselling, rescue interventions advocacy on child rights, provision of shelter the vulnerable children, and provision of vocational training and education for the youths among others and aspires to change the environment in which it operates both socially and and economically.
VISION-Our vision is to have a society where vulnerable children are enjoying their basic rights and living dignified life in their social spheres.
MISSION-To assist children in need while achieving positive change through programs that empower vulnerable families and children’s to access and enjoy their rights.
PURPOSE-Wings of a dove community center exists to provide holistic development to orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) and reintegrate them back into the community after they have successfully gone through the rehabilitation process.
CORE VALUES-We have organization that guide our every action and moderate our engagement with stakeholders and the community. The core values are as follows.

CHILDREN PROGRAMME: Wings of a dove community center lays its emphasis on giving the orphaned and vulnerable (OVC) poor children holistic rehabilitation. We emphasize on the provision of education, which will help them in their future endeavors.
The program is aimed at rehabilitating them in preparation for eventual reintegration the with their families or guardians and equips them with skills and education to become responsible, independent and active citizens.
More than 70 children’s are provided with full care at wings of a dove community centers. We work towards bringing up children who know, understand and fear God we reintegrate the children back to their families after we have conducted the necessary and assessments and home visits, we have been able to
Rescue children in difficult circumstances and reunited them back to their families. We have been able to rescue more than 300 children and successfully reintegrated them back to the community.

Presentation of the program

PROJECT ACTIVITIES/MAIN WORK AND ACTIVITIES :

(a) Community Health Clinics-both preventive and curative services.

(b) Training in home-based income-generating activities.

(c) Sports facilities in identifying and nurturing talents among the youths.

(d) Advocacy campaigns on family health and HIV/AIDs, children’s rights, domestic violence, and substance abuse among the youths.

(e) Bio-intensive farming activities targeting vulnerable families and lastly.

(f) Vocational training and formation of association for youths.
(g) Provide education to their capability.

FOOD-We provide food that is important to the growth of our children.

SHELTER-The center offers a home for these children who do not have a home. The home is also a temporally shelter for rescued children who are later reunited with their family/parents after tracing.

EDUCATION: Wings of a dove community center works in collaboration with other institution in offering our children the best services in education .all our children attend different schools while 7 are in secondary schools. We have 6 children in college.

MEDICARE: We provide medical care to children who are sick and improve their health and nutrition. By offering a balanced diet

COUNCELLING AND PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT: They are cancelled to be able to deal with life challenges and get directions during individual counselling; the social workers gives guidance and helps the child find direction on various life issues.

SPORTS: Children at wings of a dove community center are encouraged to practice sporting activities such as football, karate, African traditional wrestling, swimming and volleyball under the supervision of a coach.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The children’s are encouraged to be responsible and take care of their environment .Each child is consequently allocated duties and responsibly, for instance all children except those aged below nine, wash their own clothes and beddings.

COACHING: Social workers and volunteers offer extra tuition to help slow learning children catch up with lessons taught in their respective schools

ENTERTAINMENT: Children at wings of a dove community center find entertainment through different activities including games, music, debate, and video shows. The children are often the protagonist of the entertainment activities with group doing traditional dances, juggling, acrobatics, and others performances that build their ability to socialize and help foster a sense of belonging.

REINTEGRATION: Wing of a dove community centres main objective of the rehabilitation program is to reunite the rehabilitated child with the family or guardian by conducting regular visits to the children parents/guardian in order to maintain a positive relationship with them. We monitor the child and his family to ensure the conditions that had initially pushed the child to life on the streets do not reoccur.

INCOME-GENERATING ACTIVITY E.G BEAD-WORK: Children are taught how to make beads and make bags made of African fabric and attire, crocheting and knitting to help help generate income.

About the accommodation

Volunteers will stay in host family or in the guest room at the orphanage. Accommodations are very simple, there is running water, and meals will be prepared by volunteers by the help of the host. Beds and Mattresses will be provided. Volunteer to carry; mosquito nets, sleeping bag, a pillow and water purifying tablets. Chess, playing cards and tents are necessary.

About the food

During your stay on this project food will be provided by your host family, volunteer will be provided with three meals a day (break fast, lunch and dinner), food will be prepared by host by the help of volunteers most of foods are locally made and fresh produced.

About the leisure

Free time will provide opportunities for international volunteers to learn/enjoy local life and exchange with local people, the region has quite a number of tourist attractions and site seeing points e.g. Naivasha for bird watch, Hells Gate, Nairobi National Park Masaai Mara and other attraction sites.

Requirements

You'll need to meet certain requirements, including age, health, and attitude. You'll also need a passport and visa to enter the country.

1. Age: You must be at least 18 years old (if you are below 18 years you need written consent from a guardian), or the age required by your program ;

2. Language: You should be able to speak at least basic English, or the language required by your program ;

3. Passport: You'll need a valid passport to enter Kenya ;

4. Visa: You'll need a Single Entry Visa or tourist visa to volunteer in Kenya ;

5. Travel insurance: You'll need to have travel and health insurance ;

6. Background check: You may need to provide a criminal background check report ;

7. Vaccinations: You may need to get certain vaccinations before entering Kenya ;

8. Training: You may need to participate in training provided by your organization ;

9. You should also be open-minded, flexible, and patient, and willing to step outside your comfort zone ;

10. A positive attitude towards independent progress of others ;

11. A willingness to adapt to local conditions.

Meeting point

Arrival Terminal At Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Nairobi.

ORIENTATION Orientation will begin in the morning at ACoH offices, you will be picked up from accommodation and taken to the orientation will be conducted by ACoH staff in Nairobi and cover everything you need to know about your project placement. Introduction to Kenya, language and expectations, safety, travel opportunities in Kenya, introduction to your project and placement. The orientation will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for socializing. Once orientation is complete, volunteers will travel to the project with two staff from ACoH Office and meet other local volunteers at the project site.

Extra information

Additional requirements :

1. Some programs may have additional requirements, such as a registration fee or program fee ;

2. Medical volunteers may need to provide college enrollment documents ;

3. Volunteers working with children may need to provide a criminal background check report.

Participation fee : 400 Euros per months (12 months)

The project fee or extra fee includes: airport pick up, airport transfer, food, accommodation and host transport from Nairobi to the project and back to Nairobi after the project 24 hours Agape Office Support.

This project is ran all year round and is open for applications at all times.
