The school reopened in 2002. There are six mixed-grade classes, from first to sixth grade, with approximately 30 students attending. These students, aged 6 to 16, come from families working on the property and neighboring communities. The teacher instructs alone in a single bilingual class (Spanish/Q'eqchi') where all levels are combined, allowing him to stay close to the official education program. However, thanks to the dedication and motivation of volunteers, the school can develop in other ways, and the children can benefit from varied experiences. In the absence of volunteers, the local teacher manages all the children alone, which includes six grades of primary education combined, making his task very challenging. Fortunately, with the help of volunteers, his workload is significantly reduced as they take charge of a group of students and cover various subjects with them (math, science, Spanish, etc.). Classes are conducted in Spanish.
In the morning (7:30 am - 12:30 pm):ensure that the kids are on time;teach their group of students (maximum of 6 students).Volunteers have carte blanche to adapt their teaching methods according to the context and are free to address topics they consider important or instructive. Likewise, they are encouraged to share their knowledge and experiences. A good command of Spanish is essential. Ensure that the classrooms are properly swept by the students before the end of classes. In the afternoon: prepare lessons for the next day;Wednesday from 2 pm to 4 pm: computer class;engage in recreational activities with the children, such as swimming in the river, playing soccer, etc., if the volunteers wish.
The volunteers have their own wooden cottage, located 30 meters from the main house, with their private space and a small bathroom. They have all their meals in the main house, where Spanish, French, English, and German are spoken. They can use the house's Wi-Fi connection, so they can bring their own computer. The school is located 150 meters from the house.
