A propos de l'organisation locale

L’Arche is a non-profit organization originally based on Christian values and established in 1973 in Belgium by Jean Vanier, a philosophy teacher, and André Roberti, a Jesuit. They wanted to offer people suffering from intellectual disabilities, generally being in psychiatric hospitals, a place where human dignity is respected.

L’Arche is an international federation of people with and without disabilities who live and work together in the daily centre and in the houses. The mission of L’Arche is to provide disabled people with quality integration and develop their human skills. The originality of these small houses is based on a family-like atmosphere where disabled people, professionals and volunteers from all origins, social, cultural and philosophical backgrounds, ages and beliefs encounter one another. In addition to this house’s life, some of the disabled people are going to the day centre where activities, such as craftwork, occupational therapies or services to the larger society, are offered.

The mission of L’Arche is to welcome adults with disabilities. You will realize that disabled people are not only patients, and volunteers are not only caretakers. In L'Arche, what is vital is to aim for a mutual relationship.

A propos du travail de volontaire

We could summarize your roles in L'Arche as such: you are a "friend", but not only. By also having a role of authority, you have a supporting/teaching or ‘educational’ role; therefore, you are "a listener" too.
As part of a team, the volunteer shares his responsibility by:
• supporting disabled people in different activities (work, recreation, health, hygiene…) inside and outside the day-care centre;
• cooperating in the daily functioning between the houses and the day-care centre by accompanying the people with disabilities from their houses to their workplace, having fun and celebrating together, for instance;
• Assisting the training related to disabilities, accompaniment (how to cope with violence, affections, feelings, authority, interdependence between different status, etc.).

A propos du logement sur place

The volunteers are hosted at the “volunteers’ house”. The volunteers share the common facilities, like the kitchen, dining room and the bathroom, but they have a private room. Sometimes volunteers from other hosting organizations also stay in this house.

A propos de l'alimentation

Every working day, the volunteer eats a warm meal together with disabled people.

Localisation du projet

Belgium

Informations supplémentaires sur le projet

Volunteers will receive pocket money and french lessons.

Every month, a general allowance and a food allowance are given to the volunteer who is working in the day centre.

A propos de l'organisation locale

Renaissance ASBL is a residential center hosting 18 adults who were born with physical disabilities (cerebral palsy). The center aims at giving those people an adapted living place. Renaissance is a residential center in which each occupant has to take part in the daily tasks according to their abilities.

A propos du travail de volontaire

These tasks are supervised by various specialized people: educators, occupational therapists, speech therapists, nurses, a caseworker and physiotherapists, a multidisciplinary team in which each person accompanies the resident individually within the group.

Daily tasks at the center include:

  • Life at the center: cooking, food stocks control, laundry storage, cleaning of the kitchen.
  • Indoor activities: theatre, boccia (variation of bowls for disabled people), sports, painting, expression, media, comics, well-being.  Outdoor activities: swimming, hippotherapy, food shopping, cultural excursions.
  • Special events: Ren & Music (music festival), Ren & Bike (adapted bicycles), Ren’ART (painting exhibition), Christmas market.

During the project, the volunteer will take part in the community life of the residential center under the supervision of the staff members. They will accompany the residents during mealtimes and other moments of their life:

  • Life at the center: cooking, food stocks control, etc.
  • Leisure and creative activities: theatre, well-being, painting, expression, comics
  • Activities organized out of the center: shopping, cultural excursions, sports, etc

The volunteers will also improve their French, organize some group activities and projects.

The volunteers won’t be in charge of medical care (washing the residents, putting them to bed, waking them up, etc.).

A propos du logement sur placeThe volunteers will be housed in separate rooms on the first floor of the center. These rooms include a television, access to WiFi, a private bathroom and toilet.

A propos de l'alimentationThree meals a day will be provided to the volunteers. They will eat with the residents on the ground floor of the center or on the first floor (where they will be housed).

Localisation du projetOphain is near Braine L'alleud city, a Walloon municipality in the Belgian province of Walloon Brabant, about 20 kilometers south of Brussels. The Braine-l'Alleud municipality includes the former municipalities of Braine-l'Alleud proper, Ophain-Bois-Seigneur-Isaac, and Lillois-Witterzée. It also includes the hamlet of Sart-Moulin, the inverted name of which inspired Hergé's Moulinsart castle. The famous Lion of Waterloo where the eponymous battle took place is in the territory of Braine-l'Alleud. Bordering Flanders, the town is home to a minority of Dutch-speakers.

A propos des activités de loisirs possible

Braine-l’Alleud counts many stores and a train station. Brussels is 15 minutes away from Braine-l’Alleud by train.

A bus stop and a train station are located not far from the residential center. Bicycles are provided for the volunteers to go to the train station.

As far as leisure is concerned, Braine-l’Alleud is home to a cinema complex, many sports halls, and a cultural center.

Braine-l’Alleud is not far away from the historic site of Waterloo. Many hiking routes are available in the area.

ExigencesRenaissance wishes to welcome people having reached their legal majority who are (or are willing to be) aware of the cause of disabled people. The volunteers must have the maturity needed to face the challenges of daily life with physically disabled people. Prior knowledge of French is essential because some residents only speak French and need clear indications, in order to avoid misunderstandings that could frighten or upset them. Besides, the Renaissance residential center needs volunteers who are dynamic, motivated, keen to learn and to take initiatives, able to question themselves, and to accept remarks from the staff. They also need to be aware that they will live several months with different people who have a way of life which is sometimes totally opposed to our daily life.

Informations supplémentaires sur le projet

The volunteer will receive an amount of 110€ on a monthly basis.

This project is open to EVS volunteers as well.

- Aider à l’organisation d’événements. Par exemple :
Des rencontres et débats sur des sujets d’actualité présentant un intérêt commun ;
Aider à l’organisation d’un festival autour du thème des immigrés (échange franco-allemand pour la jeunesse, la lutte contre les préjugés)
- Organiser et créer une base de données des photographies de nos organismes membres ;
- Créer et mettre à jour un site web ainsi que des réseaux sociaux destinés à l’organisation et à la communication (flyers, affiches, cartes de visite).

A propos de l'organisation locale

The Ādaži Free Waldorf School (www.abvs.lv) is over 20 years old, and has been providing Waldorf education to over 350 students every year, from kindergarten through 12th grade. We invite two volunteers every academic year, to support the activities in the kindergarten and in the secondary school. Waldorf education, also known as Steiner education, is based on the educational philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, the founder of anthroposophy. Its pedagogy emphasizes the role of imagination in learning, striving to integrate holistically the intellectual, practical, and artistic development of pupils.

A propos du travail de volontaire

EVS volunteers in our school support the learning and creative process by becoming involved in all aspects of education. Volunteers will be in the classroom and on excursions, they will help with art and with teaching their native language and culture, and they will support school activities. Volunteers who are interested in hands-on experience at a very creative school will enjoy this project!

A propos du logement sur place

EVS volunteers are provided with housing near the school. There is a shared flat for the two volunteers, with separate bedrooms and all the necessary furnishings. Lunch is at school every day, and volunteers have funds provided for meals outside of school (pocket money). Previous volunteers have said that the accommodations are suitable and the living standard is good. The hosting organization provides transportation (usually flights) to and from the volunteers home city. Public transportation is not needed in Ādaži - the village is small and can be easily managed on foot or with a bicycle.

Exigences

Kindergarten: We are looking for a volunteer who loves children, is responsible, organized, and comfortable with doing all sorts of different activities. It is organized like a home, and everyone is involved in every aspect of 'home' life - playing with children, cooking, cleaning up, and being creative. Middle school: This volunteer should have some experience in a school/youth environment. He or she should be comfortable with pre-teenagers, mature, and responsible. English is very helpful. He/she should be able to work independently. Spanish and German volunteers are preferred!

Informations supplémentaires sur le projet

We welcome applicants who love creativity, cultural experiences, and working with children. Latvia is a beautiful country with deep forests, snowy winters, and warm experiences!

- être prêt à effectuer des tâches physiques quelle que soit la météo (en hiver les températures oscillent entre -5 et -20°C et en été elles s’élèvent à 30°C) ;
- être prêt à collaborer avec des personnes ne parlant pas la même langue ;

The EVS project "Green Skills" is hosted by the non-profit organisation RELEARN Suderbyn, based in Suderbyn Ecovillage. The Green Skills projects are completely integrated into the local Suderbyn community. Through the Green Skills program, we want to offer international participants the possibility of experiencing our special way of life with the social, ecological, economic and cultural dimensions of an ecovillage, and to develop themselves in a more holistic way. We try to provide a complete package of healthy sustainable lifestyle and ecovillage life involving practical tasks (performed gender neutrally) such as: permaculture gardening, organic and vegetarian/vegan cooking, ecological building, animal care, and administrative work.

A propos du travail de volontaire

Volunteers participate in all other issues concerning ecovillage life, such as community building, conflict resolution, administrative and organisational issues and collective decision making.

The practical arrangements for the volunteers are a flexible 35 working hours per week, including work-related discussions and instruction, as well as voluntary language training. Normally weekends are days off, and the Green Skills project adheres to standard Swedish bank/government holidays. Volunteers earn an additional 2 days of holiday from work per month. The role of the volunteer is as a co-worker, co-habitating resident and sometimes as project co-leader.

A propos du logement sur place

The volunteers will have simple accommodation in a small single or shared room. The same conditions apply for permanent inhabitants and are part of the voluntary simplicity of life in Suderbyn. A bicycle will be assigned to each volunteer for the duration of their service, but there are possibilities to travel by public bus or by car when circumstances require it. Volunteers are treated as residents in the collective, meaning they participate in community chores such as: cooking, cleaning, and maintaining the household. All food is cooked in common with the residents and is vegetarian/vegan.

Exigences

We prefer volunteers who are highly motivated and who understand that living in an ecovillage entails practical work and a simple, healthy lifestyle. Volunteers who show an understanding of the actual conditions at Suderbyn and who have a personal motivation for learning and living in community will be selected. Everyone living in Suderbyn participates in gardening, building, cooking, cleaning, and all the other tasks that create our holistic lifestyle. We will not base our recruiting on the specific existing skills of volunteers, but rather the willingness to learn and try new things.

Informations supplémentaires sur le projet

During the service there will be non-formal learning opportunities in community meetings, group discussions and workshops, along with physical work.

Greens Skills will impart theoretical knowledge and practical competences in the areas of:
- Permaculture principles and ecovillage design
- Organic gardening and sustainable food production
- Ecological construction, maintenance and renovation
- Handicraft
- Organisational and administrative issues

Volunteers will have the possibility to develop Swedish and English by formal and informal means.

A propos de l'organisation locale

Kalø Økologisk Landbrugsskole is the only school in Denmark educating young people in the field of organic agriculture. Our approximately 100 students and future farmers are instructed in domestic animal care, cultivation of plants, technical skills, social studies, economics, production and management.
We imagine that the two EVS volunteers are enrolled in a mixed program along the year according to the season.

A propos du travail de volontaire

All year long farming, including livestock (pigs, sheep, hens, cows), plants, field work, managing agricultural machinery, preparing vegetables for the farm shop etc. There is more work in agriculture from March to October but the animal care-taking is all year long.
During the winter, you will also be farming, but you will also probably be involved in other tasks like School administration including IT, marketing of the school in different networks (Instagram, Facebook, blogging etc.) and food manufacturing, tracing the process from soil to plate.

A propos du logement sur place

The volunteer will live at the school and get they three meals there.
There are public transport going between Kalø Økologiske Landbrugsskole and Århus.

Exigences

The recruitment process is open to all, but it would be generally preferred that the volunteer should have a keen interest in learning about agriculture, organic farming and sustainability. We will highly value a volunteer who is not afraid of getting his or her hands dirty from digging up vegetables or helping out taking care of the animals in the stables.

Informations supplémentaires sur le projet

The EVS projects are supported by the european commission. Travel, food and accomodation are take in charge.
The volunteer will also receive some pocket money to interact with the locals

A propos de l'organisation locale

The “Open Channel of Wettin” (“WTV - Der Offene Kanal aus Wettin”) has been providing for citizens, the so-called ‘users’, access to the know-how and the technical equipment for the production of video/movies since 1992 free of any charge. The productions are broadcasted via terrestrial television signal in Wettin, via internet streaming (see: http://wettintv.de/media.html) and partly via YouTube. For their production the "OK" offers its users professional film equipment, several film editing suites, a film studio and the support of trainees in media design and volunteers with experience in the area of film/TV production.
In this way film clips in high professional standard, partly in feature-length, and in different formats (reports, documentary and animation films) are produced. The range of topics is very broad and depends primarily on the personal interest of the users.

A propos du travail de volontaire

As part of the team at WTV they will produce reports and documentations of events for our program and will get at the same time the chance to realize their own film productions on EU-relevant topics.
Thus applicants should be able to gain knowledge in the field of film production, able to work in teams and to manage stressful situations and should like to work with children and young people.Besides we appreciate applicants with good German skills.

A propos du logement sur place

The two volunteers will be living in a fully equipped shared flat, each in his / her own room, in a very nice district in the lovely student town Halle.

They will mainly work in Wettin and Halle. Depending on the projects of WTV and their own film projects they might go to other cities in Germany as well.

Localisation du projet

WTV is situated in the little town Wettin (famous for its noble lineage that spread over whole Europe), 20 km north from Halle on the Saale, which is two car hours south of Berlin.
