Our local partner is an organization dedicated to the restoration and protection of coral reefs in Curaçao. Through concrete marine conservation actions, the organization develops coral restoration projects based on the coral gardening method, combining scientific research, community engagement, and environmental awareness. The organization actively works on creating and maintaining coral nurseries, restoring degraded reefs, and mobilizing the public around ocean protection. It welcomes international volunteers who wish to contribute directly to marine conservation while developing their diving and marine ecology skills.

This permanent project takes place in Willemstad, a coastal city in the Caribbean surrounded by exceptional coral reefs that are increasingly threatened by climate change and human pressures. The program offers volunteers the opportunity to learn about the coral gardening approach, an innovative restoration technique that involves growing coral fragments in underwater nurseries before transplanting them onto natural reefs. Volunteers take part in the different stages of the process and contribute to the organization’s daily activities. Beyond diving, the project also includes awareness initiatives, community events, and logistical support tasks, offering a fully immersive experience in a dynamic marine conservation project. Volunteer tasks Activities vary depending on project needs, weather conditions, and volunteer skills. They may include:building and maintaining underwater coral nurseries;transplanting and planting corals on reefs;participating in restoration and ecological monitoring dives;supporting data collection or documentation;helping organize local events (awareness activities, community barbecues, fundraising events);administrative or office tasks outside of diving activities.Volunteers gain insight into how a marine restoration project operates and develop a practical understanding of coral reef conservation challenges.Schedule Volunteers commit to an average of approximately 24 hours per week. Activities typically include two to three dives per week, complemented by land-based tasks (logistics, communication, organization, or maintenance). The schedule may vary depending on sea conditions and project priorities.

Volunteers are housed in accommodations provided by local partners. Housing is generally in shared rooms with other international volunteers, encouraging intercultural exchange and community living. Conditions are simple but friendly, suitable for an immersive field experience.

Meals are not systematically included. Volunteers have access to a kitchen and prepare their own meals individually or collectively. On diving or sea activity days, lunch is usually provided by the organization.

The project takes place in Curaçao, a Caribbean island known for its turquoise waters, coral reefs, and exceptional marine biodiversity. The island enjoys a sunny tropical climate year-round, making it ideal for diving activities.Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is famous for its colorful architecture, lively harbor, and multicultural atmosphere. The island is an ideal destination for ocean lovers, nature enthusiasts, and those interested in marine conservation.

During their free time, volunteers can enjoy the many activities Curaçao has to offer. The island is particularly renowned for scuba diving and snorkeling, with many sites accessible directly from shore. White-sand beaches and secluded coves offer opportunities to relax in a preserved natural setting.Volunteers can also explore Christoffel National Park, discover natural caves, go kayaking, or observe local marine wildlife. Willemstad also offers cafés, local markets, museums, and cultural events, allowing volunteers to immerse themselves in Caribbean culture.

RequirementsBe at least 18 years old at the start of the program;Hold a valid diving certification;Be in good physical condition and comfortable in the marine environment;Have a good level of English for daily communication;Be motivated by marine conservation and teamwork.A driving license is a strong asset to facilitate transportation on the island and participation in certain project activities. This project is not suitable for people with reduced mobility due to the physical and marine nature of the activities.
