The Ahero Resource Centre is a vital community-driven hub located opposite Riat Market in Ahero, Kisumu County, Kenya. Founded in 2013 by the Centre for International Voluntary Service (CIVS) Kenya in collaboration with Nyando CBO, it operates as a multi-functional "One-Stop-Shop" aimed at empowering vulnerable families, youth, and people living with disabilities (PWDs). Through an integrated socio-economic development approach, the centre provides vocational skills, sustainable agricultural knowledge, and critical social services to foster self-reliance in the region Core Community Programs • Vocational Training & IT Support: The centre offers certified TVET training through the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), including courses in Computer Operations, Fashion & Design, Cosmetology, Pastry & Baking, and Agriculture. They regularly boast exceptional marks, including a 100% pass rate in recent cohorts • Model Farm & Sustainable Agriculture: The facility operates an agricultural unit complete with greenhouses, open fields, poultry units, and fish ponds. It provides small-scale farmers and international volunteers hands-on experience with permaculture, soil management, and climate-resilient techniques • Early Childhood & Vulnerable Care: The centre serves the area's vulnerable groups by running a kindergarten that provides free education and daily meals to nearly 90 orphans and vulnerable children (OVC)
Volunteers at the Ahero Resource Centre play a hands-on, multi-faceted role in sustaining the facility's daily operations and driving community development. Organized primarily through the CIVS Kenya, both local and international volunteers dive directly into the centre's core social programs Sustainable Agriculture & Model Farm Labor A large segment of the volunteer effort is dedicated to the centre's eco-agriculture project. Volunteers bridge physical labor with community education to boost local food security: • Daily Farm Care: Tilling the land, planting crops, applying manure, weeding, watering, harvesting, and packaging produce. • Eco-Farming Demonstration: Working alongside local teams to introduce techniques to small-scale farmers that prevent soil erosion, reduce harmful chemical pesticides, replenish the soil, and manage vertical vegetable gardens. Early Childhood Education Support Volunteers act as teaching assistants in the centre's kindergarten, which provides free care to roughly 90 to 100 vulnerable children and orphans: • Classroom Teaching: Helping local teachers instruct children (ages 3–7) in basic subjects like English, drawing, Environmental Science, and Creative Arts. • Holistic Development: Strengthening children's physical and emotional growth through play-based learning, literacy support, and organizing extracurricular games. • Feeding Program Assistance: Assisting with the daily logistics of providing free meals to the students Administrative & Operational Support Beyond field and classroom work, volunteers help ensure the centre can remain open and properly funded: • Fundraising & Promotion: Supporting local fundraising drives and promoting the resource centre's community programs. • General Maintenance: Helping with everyday cleaning, maintenance tasks, and standard up-keep of the physical facilities
Accommodation and food for volunteers at the Ahero Resource Centre are structured around a communal, immersive, and culturally authentic experience. Because the project is deeply integrated into the local community, the living and dining arrangements reflect everyday life in Western Kenya Accommodation will be at the project in shared rooms and it is important that you have your own sleeping bag and mosquito net. During the workcamp, volunteers will get food from locally available foodstuffs and will share the responsibility of preparing the food. Safe drinking water is available through out. Alternatively mineral drinking water can also be purchased from the nearby shops.
