FFN/LMTV-01: English Teaching Program Summary Due to limited educational resources and a shortage of trained teachers, the situation in underdeveloped countries like Nepal remains challenging. To address this, we have developed the Volunteer Teaching Program, which includes initiatives such as Teacher Development and English Teaching in public schools and Buddhist monasteries. English is an essential international language, crucial for success in the global job market. However, students in community and public schools often lack English proficiency, limiting their opportunities. Volunteers play an important role in improving the English skills of both students and teachers. This project offers children the chance to practice spoken English and develop stronger language abilities, enabling them to access a broader range of academic and online resources. Background Nepal faces numerous challenges, including years of political instability, poverty, and limited access to quality education. These issues have prevented many Nepalese people from achieving the opportunities they deserve. At the Friendship Foundation Nepal (FFN), we believe that meaningful change begins with understanding and engaging with the community. By living with a local family, volunteers gain a deep and authentic experience of Nepali life. Immersing yourself in the local culture allows you to teach, share, and interact effectively, creating a meaningful and lasting impactâboth for the community and yourself.
Volunteers primarily teach English to children aged 6–15. Due to teacher shortages, volunteers may also assist with Math, Science, and Computer Science. School hours in Nepal are from 10 AM to 4 PM. Volunteers typically teach 3–5 classes per day, with each class lasting 45 minutes. Saturdays are holidays, and Fridays are half-days. Outside school hours, volunteers participate in daily life with their host families.
Program Duration Long-term volunteer placements last 2 to 5 months. As adapting to a new lifestyle takes time, we recommend staying as long as possible. The program starts on the first Friday of each month.
