About the volunteer workCape Nature Reserve is currently overseeing 26 protected areas. It also offers accommodation in various places for campers, canoeing, mountain biking, hikes, horse trails, ect. The reserve also works in close relation with communities in Cape Town area i.e conservation awareness and outreach programs in the surrounding urban settlements like Delft, Mitchell's Plain, Macassar. They also work in partnership with organisations like the Volunteer Centre and have recently formed a partnership with Iziko Museums. Their focus calendar events are Arbour Day, SA National Heritage Day, recognition for their volunteers on International Volunteer Day, Holiday Programs for children in urban communities and fire prevention programs. CapeNaturealso respects and welcomes the input of indigenous groups in the nearby Driftsands Nature Reserve by engaging them in steering committee meetings with management and these candidates automatically engage in volunteering in their attempt to conserve and preserve their indigenous surroundings. Main Activities Junior ranger Program aims to develop young people to enable them to make choices that are environmentally sound while fostering the spirit of volunteerism. Engage adult membersfrom the community to dedicate their time to volunteer Socio economic make-up: there is a high unemployment rate in the area and Cape Nature aims to engage the youth by offering them a chance to explore nature conservation education by offering a one year internship with a small stipend maid available. The nature reserve is surrounded by a middle-income area called Brentwood Park and an informal settlement. Conservation awareness programs and events are held in the community at halls and schools by staff with the assistance of volunteers in order to raise the moral standard of people to respect their environment by organising activities which will include physical clean-up and talks on environmental issues, fire prevention methods, water preservation, ect. Arrange signature events that will promote the Reserve. Clean up campaigns, presentation at schools, and work on other Reserves as needed. Volunteer tasks Help organize events. Provide support to the staff and administration Assist in the Junior Ranger Program Assist with holiday and outreach programs Marketing of the education centre.
Local accommodationAccomodation and food are provided by the Host Family. Internet & email facilities are available at the project site.
About the project locationThe nature reserve has urban surroundings with an informal settlement nearby. Climate is hot to mild during summer and average of 11 degrees in the morning and maximum of between 12 and 25 (afternoon) degrees during winter. The average distance for volunteers to travel to the work placement is 20 kilometres The Reserve is situated about 20 kilometres from the airport.
Extra info about the projectOn-going intake : flexible with intake preferences. Participation : 4 semaines à 16 semaines. Frais supplémentaires : 450 € pour 4 semaines, 75 € pour chaque semaine additionnelle. Le projet est ouvert toute l'année, la date d'arrivée est libre.
