About the local hosting organizationThe partner of this project is Kilimanjaro Youth Hostel (Proposed). It is a project in the community aiming to provide accommodation to traveller mostly young men and women from various culture with affordable cost for short period of time while visiting various cultural, ecological and tourist attractions that this region offers. The hostel is expected to open doors to young men and women to actively explore, innovate, and achieve broader perspective of the world while developing a deeper understanding of who they are and what is their place within the world, taking steps towards bridging the gap between people and cultures and making the world less painful, a better and more peaceful place for everybody to live.

About the volunteer workVolunteers will participate in a number of activities in the community including; Walking, hiking/biking and exploration of indigenous communities living on the sloops of Mount Kilimanjaro National park. (Introduction to issues around globalization, environment and tourism and its impact on local economy and cultures); Swahili language class, arts and music; Home stay and cultural experience (Be a grandchild, child, sister or brother for a short period), Tree planting and environmental education awareness; Renewable energy (construction and installation of demonstration energy saver stoves- the stoves are designed in a very simple technology and will be installed in few homes as a demonstration for the community to adapt); various activities aiming to promote healthy life styles (producing eating organic, sports etc.) will be organized. The study part will be divided in four folds; the big picture to understand why do we need to be developing sustainable communities, listening to nature and celebrating life; Ecological: - bioregionalism, local food and organic farming; Social:-community living, diversity and building communication skills; Economic:-understanding the global versus local argument, analyzing ecological footprint. This will be in a form of workshops, debate and educational tours.

Local accommodationVolunteers will share simple rooms at the proposed Youth hostel building. Running water and electricity will be available. The accommodation facility is located in a very strategic point where you can view the highest Mountain in Africa Mt.Kilimanjaro, The villages around as well the forest. AI kitchen volunteer will be available to provide support needed and manage the kitchen. Meals are mostly organic both vegetarian and non-vegetarian.

About the project locationPossibilities are hiking to Kilimanjaro gate, eco and cultural tourism in Chagga and Masai community, Swimming & Relaxing at Lake Chala and Wildlife safari. (Ngorongoro crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire National parks). More details can be provided on request.

Extra info about the projectWe are non-profit organization with no funding from either International voluntary Projects, The State or from the local authorities. In this regard volunteers are requested to contribute a participation fee of €250 (EURO) to be paid in Cash on arrival. This fee does cover the cost of airport pickups on arrival, orientation on arrival, food and accommodation during the project, project materials and other resources when needed and general running cost of the program. However participation fee does not cover the cost of medical/health services, all types of insurances, relevant Visas or permits, airport drop off etc.
