About the local hosting organizationThis camp is for families, seniors, couples, parents, and their young kids. One adult and one child is enough to form a family but bigger families are also welcome. Kids up to 14 years old, travelling together with an adult volunteer are welcome. This Workcamp is very unique and the only one in the projects cycle of AI-Tanzania. After working on social inclusion program last year where senior and family volunteers get involved, participating volunteers mostly families where very happy about the experience and become more convinced to organize this special project this year. The project is organized together with local Village Authority and Church Parish in Mwika area to offer an opportunity to families, seniors, couples, parents, and their young kids The volunteers are expected to join their local counterparts and activate the spirit of volunteerism through working together, interaction, experience sharing etc. The project aims to contribute to the environmental conservation and sustainability around Mount Kilimanjaro as well cross cultural understanding. taking steps towards bridging the gap between people and cultures and making the world less painful, a better and more peaceful place for everybody to live.
About the volunteer workVolunteers will participate in a number of activities in the community including; Walking and exploration of indigenous communities living on the sloops of Mount Kilimanjaro National park. (Introduction to issues around globalization, environment and tourism and its impact on local economy and cultures); Swahili language class, arts and music; Home stay and cultural experience (Be a grandchild, child, sister or brother, father or a Mother for a short period), Tree planting and environmental education awareness; Renewable energy (construction and installation of demonstration energy saver stoves- the stoves are designed in a very simple technology and will be installed in few homes as a demonstration for the community to adapt); various activities aiming to promote healthy life styles (producing eating organic, sports etc.) will be organized. Note: Special kids program will be organized for locals and International. The study part will be divided in four folds; the big picture to understand why do we need to be developing sustainable communities, listening to nature and celebrating life; Ecological: - bioregionalism, local food and organic farming; Social:-community living, diversity and building communication skills; Economic:-understanding the global versus local argument, analyzing ecological footprint. This will be in a form of workshops, debate and educational tours.
Local accommodationVolunteers will share simple rooms at the proposed Youth hostel building. Running water and electricity will be available. The accommodation facility is located in a very strategic point where you can view the highest Mountain in Africa Mt.Kilimanjaro, The villages around as well the forest. AI kitchen volunteer will be available to provide support needed and manage the kitchen. Meals are mostly organic both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. Extra and special facilities needed for senior volunteers and younger children will be made available upon request. About the project locationMwika is one of the communities located along the sloops of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the Northern Tanzania. It is high density community; people are mostly engaged in coffee and Banana farming, dairy farming and business. The community is located about 45km from the town center (Moshi) and accessible by private and public transport. Having sharing boarder with Kilimanjaro National Park, the landscape is ever green throughout the year. Free time activities Volunteers will receive back knowledge and experience through various actions in the community; they will be time available to discuss family life in each counterpart (Local and International), hiking to Kilimanjaro gate, eco and cultural tourism in Chagga and Masai community, Swimming & Relaxing at Lake Chala and Wildlife safari. (Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire National parks). More details can be provided on request.
Extra info about the projectWe are non-profit organization with no funding from either International voluntary Projects, The State or from the local authorities. In this regard volunteers are requested to contribute participation fee described below is to be paid in Cash on arrival. This fee does cover the cost of airport pickups on arrival, orientation on arrival, food and accommodation during the project, project materials and other resources when needed and general running cost of the program. However participation fee does not cover the cost of medical/health services, all types of insurances, relevant Visas or permits, airport drop off on departure date, pocket money, free/leisure activities and other personal expenses. ï‚§ No extra fee for children under 5 ï‚§ Child between 6-13 ;€150 Euro ï‚§ Above 14 and adults:- €250 Euro
