About the local hosting organizationSOS Children’s Villages are a global charity, politically and religiously independent, working to prevent family breakdown and protect and care for children who have lost parental care. SOS works to ensure that the rights of all children, in every society, are respected and fulfilled. Children are growing up in families where they can stay together with their brothers and sisters. Currently, the organisation is active in 134 countries. In Hungary it provides safe and loving home for 400 children and youngsters. Útilapu - SCI Hungary started to cooperate with SOS Hungary 4 years ago. The camp will be organised in Kecskemét Children’s Village which is located in the suburbs of Kecskemét city.
About the volunteer workThe volunteers will plan, organise and carry out educational sessions in English, free-time activities (e.g.: crafts workshops, sports events) and participate in light physical work with little kids and youngsters. The primarily task of the volunteers is cleaning up the environment (e.g.: playground, park, sports field) of the children’s village. In bad weather conditions cleaning up community buildings is also part of the work. Volunteers need to bring proper clothing for physical work. Tools and gloves are provided by the organisers. Volunteers might help in the renovation and cleaning up of a local nursery. Volunteers will help in the demonstration of the importance of physical work.
Local accommodationAccommodation will be in stone houses in the Kecskemét SOS Children's Village. Beds are provided, but you should bring your sleeping bag. Some days food is ordered, other days the ingredients will be provided for the meals and volunteers will cook together.
About the project locationSince the youth growing up in the children’s village only can rely on themselves after becoming adults and leaving the organisation, they must learn the value and the joy of a successful work, and have to gain work-experience. The camp and the volunteers will assist this learning process and act as role models.
