Descriptions :

About the local hosting organizationSustainability Park Istra is a charity project in a beautiful, but socially underprivileged part of Istria. Our primary objective is to help the local community in our region. We support them in any way we can, especially their sustainable activities such are sustainable tourism, ecofarming and preservation of local natural and cultural heritage. There is a huge potential for sustainable development in the region, but new knowledge and young energy is needed to move forward. This is exactly what we would like to bring here.

Goals :
• To help the locals in need.
• To encourage sustainable development in the region by supporting locals with sustainable projects and ideas.
• To create a model of sustainable development that can be replicated in other Slovenian and foreign regions.
• To offer our volunteers an experience of sustainable living, luxurious simplicity.
• To provide an open space, where each of us can contribute towards a better world.
• To bring out the hero in you.

About the volunteer workWe help people in need, help locals with farming and renovation of traditional stone houses, organize workshops for kids, help in an animal shelter, help local Red Cross organization, participate at local cultural events, clean overgrown terraces and paths, organize clean-up actions...To do all that we need many helping hands.
Our work is really diverse, so we are not looking for specific profiles, but we are searching for volunteers who have enthusiasm, motivation and will to learn new skills.

Local accommodation

In 2016 we finished the renovation of an old rectory in the village of Hrvoji, several hundred years old and made of beautiful local stone. We renovated it in a sustainable way, using natural materials. This is now a volunteers' home and our project's headquarters. We have some beds for volunteers and a nice piece of our property reserved for tents.

In the summer most of our volunteers stay in volunteering camps in different Istrian villages, where we stay for a few weeks to help locals in these villages. Please write to us to find out more about the locations of the volunteering camps and the charity work that will be done there. Participants of the camps will mostly sleep in tents or old Istrian houses.

What can you expect to get here

  • Three vegetarian meals and access to a communal fridge if you need to grab a snack between the meals.
  • Bathroom with showers and toilets.
  • You will get eco soap, toothpaste and shampoo at our place.
  • We have some blankets, sheets and tents for volunteers.

Please ask in advance if you need them.

Special info about the foodThree vegetarian meals and access to a communal fridge if you need to grab a snack between the meals.

About the project locationThe project is located in Istria region, at the border of Slovenia and Croatia. Our headquarters are in Hrvoji, a small, almost empty village, about one hour drive with bus from the coastal town of Koper.

About the leisure activities possibleAdriatic coast with its many beaches is about 30-minute drive from Hrvoji. Same distance from us are beautiful old church in Hrastovlje, Istrian thermal resort (Istarske toplice) and historical hill-top villages of Grožnjan and Motovun, populated by artist communities. For our volunteers we organized charity discounts for some of Slovenia's most interesting activities, such are Soča Valley's canyoning and rafting and hiking in caves of Postojna and Škocjan. Towns of Venice, Ljubljana and Julian Alps with Triglav national park are 1.5 to 2 hours away. In the free time after lunch and in the evenings we share with one another our knowledge, talents, sing by the bonfire, play social games, walk on the slack line, go swimming, climbing, play volleyball, read, watch movies and talk. You are welcome to share your talents, skills, stories…

Extra info about the project

We decided to dedicate our work to non-profit charity activities only. This makes us different from most other hosts, but also means that we do not create profit to cover volunteers' costs. Therefore we kindly ask volunteers to contribute 10 eur a day towards the costs of their stay.
