About the local hosting organizationThe local partner Gami Seva Sevana – GSS - (Shelter for villagers) are established as a integrated organic farm in 1977 with the financial support from some international donation agencies. Five years ago all the funds are terminated suddenly then most of the activities are collapsed. After that another group had taken the responsibility to development the collapsed project. GSS consists with an animal husbandry (cattle and goats) and bio - gas unit, vegetable plantation plots including leafy vegetables, tea plantation, banana plantation and cinnamon plantation. These plantations are only use organic manure. They had a training center to train local youths as organic farmers too. Volunteers assist to GSS to rehabilitate and rebuild the farm as a complete model farm while they experiencing the natural way of agriculture.
About the volunteer workMainly working at the farm while assisting its day today work. Making composts, making beds, planting seeds or seedlings, watering, harvesting are among the regular work. But volunteers have to record your work and its effects are essential. Volunteers can visit to villages to assists their home gardening activities. On Saturdays volunteers can join with village children English classes.
Local accommodationFarm house. Volunteers have a single room. Host family will cook for you. No hot water and Wifi. But internet is available at the office so volunteers can check your mails there. Cloths washing by washing machine.
About the project locationLocated at 130km from Colombo. This is a mountainous area and elevation is 1100m above sea level. Environment is cool, windy and low humid. Used for tea plantation by the British people until late 19th century. Still some plantations can be seen. Agriculture, dairy farming and working at tea plantation are the main income of the community.
RequirementsGood English, Speaking, reading and writing, High motivation to work with rural people, adapt/ respect to local culture and rules. Desirables are language skills of Sri Lankan, experience of travelling, some experience about organic agriculture, know some games for youths, children etc. Good health. No any kind of drugs, alcohol or smoking during the project period. We are not eating beef and pork.
Extra info about the projectOther activities: Volunteers can learn how to cook local meals and taste different fruits. Meditation center is just 3 km away from the center. Volunteers can visit there when volunteers free while experiencing nature of hill country. Other: Volunteers have to work 5 days per week, at least 6 hours per day. Volunteers have to work one weekend day according to request of school children. Two free days, volunteers can arrange as two consecutive days or different two days.
