About the local hosting organizationStar Rays Education Center is a community based Organization (CBO) and an upcoming Rural Resource Information Centre. The CBO was registered by the Ministry of Culture and Social services as a Community Based Organization (CBO) in 2002 while the School is registered by the Ministry of Education as Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre and a Primary school. Though the School is non-profit making organization, the beneficiaries contribute in various forms. Partnership with a wide spectrum of organizations has ensured the launch of income generating activities that are the backbone of economic stability of the institution. The project is located in a rural area which is ranked among the poorest despite its potentiality as an agricultural hub with numerous underutilized resources. Poor health, high child mortality rate, high illiteracy levels, lack of ICT know how, high unemployment are challenges that confront the local community.

About the volunteer workProject activities Early Childhood Development (ECD); Primary School Education; Care and Support Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) and HIV/AIDS families; Community information (library) Services; Small business incubation; Community Empowerment trainings in various fields; Agency services – linkage between self-help groups and different organizations and companies for better and easier services; Information and communication Technology (ICT) promotions and services; Civic Education and Voluntarism. 1. Provision of Early Childhood Development {ECD} Education to children aged 3-5years. 2. Provision of basic {Primary } education to children aged 5-15years 3. Provision of life skills, civic education, sustainable agriculture {organic farming}, promotion of information technologies, community library services 4. Cultural exchange visits, home visits, historical and tourist sites visits 5. Construction, development of our centre and associated amenities. e.g. road and drainages Volunteer tasks Teaching Sporting and club activities Guiding and counseling for the pupils at the Center General work at Kongoni Health Center Motivational talks to students at the neighbouring Schools Agricultural activities and nature conservation Cultural exchange between farmers and volunteers Sanitation Writing of monthly reports, quarterly and annual reports

Local accommodationHome stay and the volunteer is entitled to private room but will share other amenities and meals with the host family. It is convenient for the volunteer to carry sleeping bag, mat and personal effects. KVDA has a memorandum of understanding with the host project regarding the project costs with appropriate procedures, checks and balances.

RequirementsWhat to carry: This is outlined in the detailed info sheet and includes, sleeping bag and mat, toiletries, torch, flashlight, sandals, mosquito net, national flag from your country, among others DONATION AND GIFTS: These are usually symbolic gestures to enhance the solidarity of volunteers and the hosting community. Kindly contact KVDA for details in case you are willing to support a worthy cause in the community either by offering a donation or long-term intervention on the project.

Extra info about the projectThe project participation fees is Euro 200 per month paid upfront on arrival to the cover costs stipulated the entire duration of the project. Monthly payment of participation fees is not allowed for conventional purposes. Volunteers accepted on MLTV project for one month will pay Euros 300 for the one month placement. INCLUDED : Return transfers from the airport and project Full board at the project (Accommodation and meals provided at the project) Orientation, evaluation and monitoring Volunteer mentorship NOT INCLUDED : Refreshments outside the project Air ticket, Excursion, Visa and Insurance Local travel and Personal effects PROJECT START DATES It is recommended that volunteers applying to join this project should be aware that school terms in Kenya start at the beginning of the following months January, May and September 2016. This means the volunteers wishing to participate in this project should arrive in Kenya at the start of January, towards the end of April and towards the end of August 2016.
