About the local hosting organizationEnvironmental Education Center of Ierapetra-Neapoli, Crete. Local partners believe that international volunteers are an incentive to the whole local community to get involved in the solution of local problems. The local partner is involved in numerous activities and events that combine sports in nature and environmental protection.
About the volunteer workVolunteers will organize an awareness raising campaign organization in the topic of sports for all volunteering. The basic actions of this campaign will include: - Awareness raising nature bicycle rides for all ages shop in town and in nature (for all ages) - Meeting with high school students of Koutsouras: Discussion on sustainable mobility in cities. - Accompany a group of teenagers (12-16 years old) in the crossing Butterfly Gorge, a trail for hikers that was re-open and maintained by international volunteers in the past years - Support an event on First Aid training for injured athletes and outdoor living in nature. - Creation of an electronic guide in several languages on participation opportunities in alternative sports activities in the region. - Creation of two awareness raising workshops on Sports for all. Volunteers will work 5 hours per day, 6 days per week. We might need to adapt the daily schedule (e.g start working at 6 in the morning or work both morning and afternoon) in order to avoid the hottest hours of the day. Any changes in the working schedule and/or type of work will be discussed and decided as a group and in close cooperation with the local host.
Local accommodationVolunteers will be hosted in a small guest house in the village of Koutsouras. Volunteers are expected to sleep on bunk beds provided by the local host. Shower and warm water as well as all basic facilities are provided. Volunteers will be given all necessary equipment and materials from the local host and they will prepare their meals in shifts. We cook using local products and donated row or cooked supplies and we adapt our menu to the supplies we have.
About the project locationThe village of Koutsouras is situated in the south of Crete in the Lasithi province. The Forest Park of Apigania in Ierapetra (5000 acres) consists of the Koutsoura woods (100 acres), with infrastructure for miscellaneous educational, sports and leisure activities and an afforested land of 300 acres, with species of Cretan and Mediterranean flora. Visits and environmental education excursions to the most important sites of the area can be organised. A visit to the Sitia Geopark is planned together with sport hiking through caves. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to visit and participate in some of the cultural events organised in different parts of the area.
RequirementsThis workcamp is accessible to A4A volunteers (inaccessible for wheelchair users).
Extra info about the projectNOMADs Project! Only open for volunteers from Italy, France, Greece, Scotland, Spain, and Estonia! This workcamp is a part of European project NOMADs managed by the Italian association LUNARIA. The project brought together 11 European partners representing 6 countries (Italy, France, Greece, Scotland, Spain, and Estonia). Its objective is to facilitate the mobility of young people through sports. During the summer of 2017 other actions will be organized in different European cities. You will also participate in the preparation and the organization of a sport event in order to promote Sports for All.
