About the local hosting organizationBuilding playgrounds from recycled materials is one important part of the project “Friendly school – Brightened future” initiated and coordinated by Volunteers for Peace Vietnam. With the purpose of creating an environmentally friendly playground from recycled materials for mountainous children, motivating them to attend school as well as raising public awareness of environment protection, the projet has been successfully implemented in Ta Tong and Pa U, Muong Te district, Lai Chau province. This project not only contributes to the improvement of education environment in mountainous areas but also connects people who enjoy voluntary activities. The project is gaining positive attention from the public, the media, voluntary organizations, altruistic individuals and young volunteering enthusiasts. In succession to that, VPV Club has decided to bring project “Friendly schools- brightenen future” to children at Lao Cai. Lao Cai is a province of the mountainous Northwest region of Vietnam bordering the province of Yunnan in China. The province covers an area of 6383.9 square kilometres and as of 2008 it had a population of 602,300 people. In the province, one can observe the large rich and poor gap. While there are big houses in some towns, expensive cars on the streets, most of the population, with ethnic Vietnamese being the majority, are still experiening a difficult life. In fact, Lao Cai is currently one of the two poorest provinces in the country along with Lai Chau, with more than 70% of the population living under the poverty line. Traditional economic activities such as agriculture and forestry remain important, but the province has also been attempting to develop foreign investment in the area. In order to attract and push foreign investment, it is important to have a capable workforce to work with them. Therefore, the province has also paid more attention to education and is trying to encourage children to go to school. However, in the mountainous areas, the drop-out rate from school is rather high due to many reasons. One of them is the lack of facilities and playgrounds that makes going to school is not applealing enough to the children. Therefore, VPV wishes to build a playground from recycled materials to one school in Lao Cai, with the hope that it would attract more children to school.
About the volunteer workBased on the agreement with local government and desire of local communities, the project team is going to conduct the construction of playground from recycled materials such as used tires, plastic bottles, glass, and wood in Lao Cai. The projected area for the playground is about 30m². The construction process will be supported by local government, people living in this area as well as Vietnamese and international volunteers. Detailed work includes: • Collect and process recycled materials for the playground • Build the playground • Decorate the playground • Create game from recycled materials.
