About the local hosting organizationThe handicapped children and youths in the community endure unbearable suffering because of the nature of the cultural practices and the attitude of community members. Mental retardation is stigmatized and any child with such handicapped is either hidden at home or kept to look after their animals. Poroko special school is the only such school in the larger Trans-Mara region. It is located in the Maasai country side. The school was established to address the plight of the handicapped among the Maasai community. The school thus will go a long way in addressing this crucial problem. The school at the moment has a total of 72 students and seven teachers and seven support staff. 50 students are in residence in the school. The main objective of the school is to equip the mentally handicapped in the area of operation with life skills and get employed in other sectors with technical qualification to own their own small industries and hence create their own employment and be selfreliant Project activities Nurturing and developing the skills and talents of children with mental disability and making the community aware of their needs and how well they can be integrated into the development spectrum of the community.

Local accommodationHome stay and the volunteer is entitled to private room but will share other amenities and meals with the host family. It is convenient for the volunteer to carry sleeping bag, mat and personal effects. KVDA has a memorandum of understanding with the host project regarding the project costs with appropriate procedures, checks and balances.

Extra info about the projectThe project participation fees is Euro 200 per month paid upfront on arrival to the cover costs stipulated the entire duration of the project. Monthly payment of participation fees is not allowed for conventional purposes. Volunteers accepted on MLTV project for one month will pay Euros 300 for the one month placement. INCLUDED : Return transfers from the airport and project Full board at the project (Accommodation and meals provided at the project) Orientation, evaluation and monitoring Volunteer mentorship NOT INCLUDED : Refreshments outside the project Air ticket, Excursion, Visa and Insurance Local travel and Personal effects It is recommended that volunteers applying to join this project should be aware that school terms in Kenya start at the beginning of the following months January, May and September 2016 This means the volunteers wishing to participate in this project should arrive in Kenya at the start of January, towards the end of April and towards the end of August 2016
