About the local hosting organizationICYE India Kutumba was established in 1991, to provide an integrated foster care program for destitute disabled girls. 'Kutumba' is derived from the sanskrit word meaning a joint family living together under one roof. Kutumba provides a home for these children, who we feel have been rejected twice, first by their families and then by society.
About the volunteer workWe work with physically and borderline mentally challenged young women and girls between the ages of 12 and 28. Our programmes include working with the disabled, preschoolers, school drop outs and extracurricular activities for students. We have 9 staff for these various projects. In poor families these children are seen as a drain on scarce resources since they cant contribute in terms of income or manpower. A poor rural household is ill equipped to handle disability; lacking the basic understanding, leave alone the finances or motivation. The tragedy is that due to lack of proper nourishment and medical facilities a large percentage of disabled children are in rural areas where there are no facilities for them at all. Volunteers can spend time with children aged 3-5 and with disabled aged 18-28. They will need to think of activities and create programmes for activities for children. They can also be music teachers or help in designing clothes.
Local accommodationThe volunteer will live in host project or host family. Food will be provided by the host project or host family.
