About the local hosting organization'De Brugse Poort' is a super diverse neighborhood in the city of Ghent. Experience has taught us that there is a need for creative initiatives where people from different backgrounds can meet each other, express themselves, exchange ideas and feel involved. As a non profit organization ('De Vergunning') we took up the task of renovating a building that has fallen into decay. This building was formerly used as a theater, cinema and youth center. We will now change it into 'De Koer', where for the next 35 years we want to create a place that will help form a community, a place for artistic work and development, connected to the historical, architectural, geographical and social meaning of the site.
About the volunteer workThere will be two different areas of work. Most of the time we will be finishing the rebuilding work that needs to be done. This includes painting, finishing up the walls, working at the garden, etc. Aside from the rebuilding work, it will also be the task of the volunteers to help before and during our opening festivities. These festivities will take place the 23rd of September, close to the end of the work camp. This part of the work will include preparing the party and setting things up, helping with promotion, preparing food for visitors and artists, providing entertainment for children, …
