A propos de l'organisation locale

L’Arche is a non-profit organization originally based on Christian values and established in 1973 in Belgium by Jean Vanier, a philosophy teacher, and André Roberti, a Jesuit. They wanted to offer people suffering from intellectual disabilities, generally being in psychiatric hospitals, a place where human dignity is respected.

L’Arche is an international federation of people with and without disabilities who live and work together in the daily centre and in the houses. The mission of L’Arche is to provide disabled people with quality integration and develop their human skills. The originality of these small houses is based on a family-like atmosphere where disabled people, professionals and volunteers from all origins, social, cultural and philosophical backgrounds, ages and beliefs encounter one another. In addition to this house’s life, some of the disabled people are going to the day centre where activities, such as craftwork, occupational therapies or services to the larger society, are offered.

The mission of L’Arche is to welcome adults with disabilities. You will realize that disabled people are not only patients, and volunteers are not only caretakers. In L'Arche, what is vital is to aim for a mutual relationship.

A propos du travail de volontaire

We could summarize your roles in L'Arche as such: you are a "friend", but not only. By also having a role of authority, you have a supporting/teaching or ‘educational’ role; therefore, you are "a listener" too.
As part of a team, the volunteer shares his responsibility by:
• supporting disabled people in different activities (work, recreation, health, hygiene…) inside and outside the day-care centre;
• cooperating in the daily functioning between the houses and the day-care centre by accompanying the people with disabilities from their houses to their workplace, having fun and celebrating together, for instance;
• Assisting the training related to disabilities, accompaniment (how to cope with violence, affections, feelings, authority, interdependence between different status, etc.).

A propos du logement sur place

The volunteers are hosted at the “volunteers’ house”. The volunteers share the common facilities, like the kitchen, dining room and the bathroom, but they have a private room. Sometimes volunteers from other hosting organizations also stay in this house.

A propos de l'alimentation

Every working day, the volunteer eats a warm meal together with disabled people.

Localisation du projet

Informations supplémentaires sur le projet

Volunteers will receive pocket money and french lessons.

Every month, a general allowance and a food allowance are given to the volunteer who is working in the day centre.

A propos de l'organisation localeLe Fagotin is located in Stoumont, in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes. It is a quiet village, surrounded by forests. It is the perfect place to go for a walk in the forest. It has already worked with volunteers. Each year, about fifteen interns come and help on the farm. The farm building belongs to the family. They make it available to the organization. It has bought another building in which work will be done. It will be converted into a residential center.

A propos du travail de volontaireVolunteers will decide, according to what they prefer to do, what they will do. They can either take part to the pedagogical project or work in the farm. Those who will work on the pedagogical project will supervise groups. Those who prefer manual work will work in the farm (feed animals, clean the barn') Volunteers must be aware that working in a farm can be very physical. It can be very tiring. Working with animals is a concrete job (feeding animals, cleaning the barn') and not a romantic one (a cow is not a nice stuffed animal). Volunteers will always be supervised, they will not be alone. They will help adults who work on the site. Workers will teach them how to do the different tasks. The aim is that they slowly become more and more independent. Work schedule will depend on the moments. The farm works 24h a day. At some moments, there will be work for more than 8 hours. In summer, there are sessions for children. During those sessions, children will have activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Walking in the forest, taking care of the animals, making bread'). After 4 p.m., it will be necessary to organize games, dinner, showers, night walks and breakfast. Children are between 3 and 15 years old (for those who do not stay there at night) and between 6 and 15 years old (for those who stay at night).

A propos du logement sur placeIn 2014, volunteers must sleep in a tent during the summer. They must bring their tent, their mattress'. It is possible to sleep in a residential center, but it costs about 350 . Food is included

Localisation du projetVolunteers need to bring clothes to go outside. Clothes that can be dirtied and that are are necessary. It is important to bring boots or walking shoes, a rain jacket and sweaters (it can be really cold and/or rain much). - Computers, cameras' can be kept in a secured room in the main building. - Volunteers will have access to the internet. - It is an isolated village. It is the perfect place for those who like walking in the forest.

ExigencesConditions: - A certificate of good conduct - It is very important to like contact with handicapped people or with people living in a difficult situation. - It is important to be fond of animals or living outside - It is very important to like organizing games and activities with children - Volunteers must have been vaccinated against tetanus. - Volunteers need not to be allergic to milk, flour, dust or animals. - It is important to speak a little bit of French - Work can be really physical - If volunteers want to visit the region, they will be able to take the bus and the train.

A propos de l'organisation localeThe initiative for the creation of A&V is due to parents worried by the lack of structures for people with intellectual disabilities. A&V is an association of three homes and one day center welcoming people with a light to moderate intellectual disability. Located on the outskirts of Brussels, they offer a family life to people who are supervised by professionals and volunteers. During the day, the majority of interns work in sheltered workshops, others go to the day center. The A&V's mission is to create, manage and run activities and places to live, and work to ensure a social integration of quality to people with intellectual disabilities. It seems to us that the diversity of social contacts is an asset for the residents. That is why we want to enrich the lives of homes and strengthen community spirit by welcoming a volunteer, for a period of 3 to 12 months, who must have the desire to live everyday with people with disabilities in a family, friendly and supportive atmosphere. A&V is a private association that receives no subsidies from the State. We depend solely on the rent paid by the people welcomed by the organization as well as on donations from individuals, which explains why the management team is limited and why we are working very hard with volunteers. The school population has a slight to moderate backwardness and shows no violent behavior that may affect the volunteer.

A propos du travail de volontaireTeams in the three houses collaborate regularly and integrate volunteers' participation in their daily functioning in order to offer the residents a rich and wide social environment. The volunteer is entirely part of the team, and participates to every meeting with the only restriction of meetings under professional confidence. The volunteer will participate to the community life: during the evenings (4pm to 9.30pm), sometimes in the morning (6am to 8am), and some weekends (from Friday 3.30pm to Sunday 10pm), with a maximum of 35h/week. For the day center, the timetables are as following: Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm with a maximum of 35h/week. The exact timetable will be set with the volunteer in order to attend his needs and requests. It will also take into account the French lessons (for max. 5h/week). Each month, the exact daily planning will be delivered to the volunteers. In July, the homes are closed for three weeks. If the volunteer wants to, he can participate to the holidays organised by the association. The volunteer will have to respect the common rules: respect cleanness and tidiness of common places, respect resident's sleep (no noise after 9pm), respect no-smoking places (inside the house), and accept not to drink alcohol inside the house in front of the residents (he will be given the house rules). He will always be accompanied by a responsible person during his work hours.

A propos du logement sur placeFood will be provided to the volunteer during his working hours. The rest of the time, he will have to cook for himself. The volunteer has the possibility to go to the shop with the person in charge or to make an order for one week. This order must be ready on Thursday at 3pm in order to facilitate the organization. We ask the volunteer not to use the existing stocks because they are needed for the residents' weekly meals. A shelf in the fridge will be provided to each volunteer, who is responsible for the conservation of his food. Eventual allergies or special diets must be communicated to the person in charge. There is a kitchen available for the volunteers in every house. It must be cleaned up and tidied up after each use, because we are subject to hygiene regulations. The volunteer is asked to clean his room or apartment during his stay and when he leaves. Cleaning equipment and products are available. A key will be given to the volunteer, and must be returned when he leaves. If he loses it, we might have to change the locks.

Localisation du projetThe center is located at 3km of the city center of Braine-l’Alleud.  Braine-l’Alleud counts many stores and a train station. Brussels is 15 minutes away from Braine-l’Alleud by train.  A bus stop and a train station are located not far from the residential center. Bicycles are provided for the volunteers to go to the train station.  As far as leisure is concerned, Braine-l’Alleud is home to a cinema complex, many sports halls, and a cultural center.  Braine-l’Alleud is not far away from the historic site of Waterloo. Many hiking routes are available in the area.

ExigencesRenaissance wishes to welcome people having reached their legal majority who are (or are willing to be) aware of the cause of disabled people. The volunteers must have the maturity needed to face the challenges of daily life with physically disabled people. Prior knowledge of French is essential because some residents only speak French and need clear indications, in order to avoid misunderstandings that could frighten or upset them. Besides, the Renaissance residential center needs volunteers who are dynamic, motivated, keen to learn and to take initiatives, able to question themselves, and to accept remarks from the staff. They also need to be aware that they will live several months with different people who have a way of life which is sometimes totally opposed to our daily life. Volunteers have a place at the Renaissance residential center. The partner of the SVI will do everything to create a real exchange between them and the residents of the center.

A propos de l'organisation locale

Don Bosco is a boarding school made up of 7 big houses which can host up to 120 youth studying in different schools
in Brussels.
Don Bosco was one of the best educators of modern times as he developed success-oriented teaching methods. Every
youth has a huge potential. The whole educational work is done by pupil’s parents, teachers, educators and
volunteers altogether. The objective is to make sure the youth is in the best conditions to experience in a positive way
his abilities. Thus, the youth feels empowered because he realises that he has true abilities, gains self-esteem and
throws himself into his homework because he enjoys doing it.
The main objective is to help these young people to achieve academic, human and social success through three
cornerstones:
- Reason: discussing on issues drives them to use their abilities to think, to make decisions and to get involved.
- Religion: as a way to look for meaning in their lives.
- Love: which is shown by the educators through being a loving, strict and attentive person and by the youth by being
grateful.

This teaching method is based on confidence in youths’ positive future.

A propos du travail de volontaire

You will be in charge of the youths on a daily basis and supervise them at different moments of the boarding
daily life through:
 Daily tutoring (helping the pupils individually)

 Supervising the activities that take place on the evening (by being creative and organised)

 Supervising mealtimes

 Waking the pupils up and helping them to prepare their lunch pack, accompanying them to schools (by
walking or driving)...
Sending them to bed

 Ensuring their moral, emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual well-being

 Doing everything to enable each of them to improve

 Providing some services: going to the supermarket, painting...
Making sure that the premises in which the youth are living are neat and clean

 Going to the supermarket once a week
This is a non-exhaustive list.
As a volunteer, your presence is a very important asset but you will not replace the educators who are currently
working there. You will have to assist the team

A propos du logement sur place

Accommodation at the student hall of residence will be provided.

A propos de l'alimentation

You will have to buy your own food and to cook it yourself over the weekends and on your days off. You can use the
kitchen.
Vegetarian meals can be provided.

Localisation du projet

Ganshoren is one of the nineteen municipalities of Brussels which is located in the north-west of the city, 20 minutes

different social backgrounds live. The boarding school is located in a quiet and verdant environment. Buses 87, 84 as
well as “De Lijn” buses serve this place very often.

A propos de l'organisation localeDon Bosco is a boarding school made up of 7 big houses which can host up to 120 youth studying in different schools in Brussels. Don Bosco was one of the best educators of modern times as he developed success-oriented teaching methods. Every youth has a huge potential. The whole educational work is done by pupil's parents, teachers, educators and volunteers altogether. The objective is to make sure the youth is in the best conditions to experience in a positive way his abilities. Thus, the youth feels empowered because he realises that he has true abilities, gains self-esteem and throws himself into his homework because he enjoys doing it. The main objective is to help these young people to achieve academic, human and social success through three cornerstones: - Reason: discussing on issues drives them to use their abilities to think, to make decisions and to get involved. - Religion: as a way to look for meaning in their lives. - Love: which is shown by the educators through being a loving, strict and attentive person and by the youth by being grateful. This teaching method is based on confidence in youths' positive future.

A propos du travail de volontaireYou will be in charge of the youths on a daily basis and supervise them at different moments of the boarding daily life through: ï‚· Daily tutoring (helping the pupils individually) ï‚· Supervising the activities that take place on the evening (by being creative and organised) ï‚· Supervising mealtimes ï‚· Waking the pupils up and helping them to prepare their lunch pack, accompanying them to schools (by walking or driving)... Sending them to bed ï‚· Ensuring their moral, emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual well-being ï‚· Doing everything to enable each of them to improve ï‚· Providing some services: going to the supermarket, painting... Making sure that the premises in which the youth are living are neat and clean ï‚· Going to the supermarket once a week This is a non-exhaustive list. As a volunteer, your presence is a very important asset but you will not replace the educators who are currently working there. You will have to assist the team

A propos du logement sur placeAccommodation at the student hall of residence will be provided. You will have to buy your own food and to cook it yourself over the weekends and on your days off. You can use the kitchen. Vegetarian meals can be provided.

A propos de l'organisation localeThe project consists in creating a school inspired by the active learning teaching methods. It also consists in organising events about the teaching skills topic. The teaching project lies on the following principles : 1. A school inspired by active methods teaching the children how to be autonomous. 2. A school developing the 8 different kinds of intelligence 3. A school teaching peace and cooperation skills 4. A school with an involved teaching staff 5. A school developing actual links with the pupil's parents 6. A school paying attention to the fact that every child is different.

A propos du travail de volontaireYou'll help and supervise the children everyday from 8 am to 3.30 pm You'll create activities with the teacher's help. You'll support the school activities by being a part of it (different kinds of events)

A propos du logement sur placeA host family will greet and offer meals to the youth. He or she could help cooking, work in the vegetable garden and harvest vegetables according to an agreement with the family. If we found a larger building to host the school, there could be a room for the volunteer. Thus, he or she would be in charge of his or her meals and be nice to the organisation team and help it when the team needs it.

Localisation du projetThe project takes place in Lessive, a village in the Famenne area in Belgium. This is a beautiful village located in the countryside. The school is located near a forest, some paths and a river. This village is very active and all generations live there. The school is located about 5 kilometers from Rochefort, the nearest town. You can have a nice walk or ride a bike or a horse in the countryside. The cultural center des Roches offers many shows. You can also visit the Han caves (Grottes de Han) and animal park in Lesse. The Petit Théâtre de la grande Vie offers some activities, music and art lessons and shows to everybody. There are several projects and local initiatives too.

A propos du logement sur placevolunteers sleep in a tent during the summer. They must bring their tent, their mattress'. It is possible to sleep in a residential center, but it costs about 350 euro.

A propos de l'alimentation

Food is included. A great opportunity to enjoy local food !

A propos des activités de loisirs possible

The project is in a small village in  beautiful natural area. A great place if you like walking in the countryside
