About the local hosting organizationProtagon – Friends and Supporters of free Theater Action e.V. organizes large and small cultural events. Such as theatre and dance workshops, educational and social projects for children and adults across all genres and offers training, production and performance rooms as well as residencies for artists. The association is committed to ensure that free artists, groups and interested people can interact artistically and constructively. This is mainly done in Frankfurt am Main (on the cultural space at Orber Straße 57), in the region, nationally and internationally. The object of the association is the encouragement and facilitation of independent theatre as well as contemporary art and culture.

Presentation of the programmeVolunteering for the sommerwerft gives the opportunity to 25 young people to come and volunteer for about a month with the association PROTAGON e.V. in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. The team of 25 people arrives a few days before the build-up of the festival starts. The volunteers will sleep in a living and working community, where about 160 people share a house and a big garden. To go to the festival place that is in the city center of Frankfurt, volunteers can take one of our bikes or use our shuttle service. The working tasks are NOT directly related to something artistical. Tasks include maintaining the community place, and helping to take care of a specific area of the festival (concert tent or stage, bar, caffee or food stand, children program...). The festival lasts 17 days. The activity ends up with 3 build-down days of the festival, and some extra days where volunteers are invited to reflect and celebrate together.

Local accommodationEverybody sleeps on the cultural space of protagon e.V., in the garden, where a lot of rooms where build out of containers, busses, caravans and big tents. Volunteers will share their room with others. In the house, they will find the bathrooms, a breakfast hall, and other commodities such as a living room, a laundry... Food is provided in the community (with meat, vegetarian and vegan options) for breakfast and brunch, and later in the day at the festival place for lunch and dinner. Bikes and shuttle are available.

About the leisure activities possibleArtistic workshops are offered to the volunteers, they can sign up to some of them and take part to the trainings on the festival place. There will be the possibility for the volunteers to propose morning activities from 9 to 10 AM, which they can share with other participants. If no volunteers wishes to offer a training, then the morning trainings will be led by members of our team. (yoga, streching, improv' theatre...). There is also the opportunity to learn technical skills, such as repairing bikes, maintaining a theatre or music stage, attending audiences and artists.

RequirementsThe Participant profile: The participants should have two main qualities: - Be interested in cultural events, arts and artistic way of communication - Be ready to live in a community with a lot of other people (over 100 people) and know how to share a space in a good-mannered way. We expect politeness, respectful behaviours, solidarity and maturity among our team members. On our grounds, families and children are living with us. Workers have to wake up early and carry big responsibilities. We wish our volunteers to take the opportunity quite seriously. Our aim is to create bridges between cultures and generations.
Deadline: 15/06/2026 12:00

Extra info about the projectThe project is implemented under the European Solidarity Corps Programme, financed by the European Commission.
The participating organisations have to be mindful of these needs as they are responsible for providing a respectful and trusting hosting environment. At the same time, the organisations participating in the initiative devote a great deal of time, energy and resources to set up a high-quality activity; they should therefore expect that European Solidarity Corps participants show a similar level of respect for the local communities and the people that are directly concerned by the activities (https://youth.europa.eu/solidarity/mission_en).
