Chile

Chile is a South American country that shares its borders with Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast and Argentina to the east. The territory is approximately 1,236,000 square kilometres. Easter Island, located 3,000 kilometres from Valparaíso in the Pacific Ocean, has been part of Chile since 1884. With a presence on three continents – South America, Oceania and Antarctica – Chile can be defined as a tricontinental country. The capital of this elongated country is Santiago.

Chile is a beautiful and little-known country. This thin strip of land, nearly 4,300 km long, stretching under a pure sky riddled with stars, has many advantages.

The kindness and hospitality of its inhabitants is one of them. Another is the spectacle of Chile’s wild landscapes, of incredible diversity and great beauty.

Chile is one of the so-called southern cone countries and among the Latin American countries, it is the one where European culture is the most assertive, along with Argentina. Chile is the most developed country on the Latin American continent (in 2010, its human development index was 0.8957). It was also, in 2010, the least corrupt country in Latin America, and one of the most democratic.

Chilean Spanish is spoken, but also Amerindian languages such as Runa Simi, Mapudungun or Aymara, and a Polynesian language, Vânaga rapanui (on Easter Island), none of which has official status.

The national currency is the peso.
