About the local hosting organization

Our local partner Velofabrik was initially imagined by Jean-Philippe Gerkens, a certified bicycle mechanic and sociologist by training. It has gathered a dozen friends and acquaintances to take up this bold and passionate challenge. In July 2014 eight people founded Velofabrik, a cooperative society with social purposes.

The Board is composed of 6 members: Matthieu Mallié, Arnaud Pinxteren, Stéphane Filleul, Benoît Blondel, Jean-Philippe Gerkens and Nathalie Jouant. Wouter Tas and Rik Potoms are also founders of the association.

For now our partner’s work is fully financed by its collaborator’s investment: individuals and societies convinced by Velofabrik’s project have decided to invest in it to make it live. By paying a fee of 100 euros, you have the opportunity to become one of its collaborators. Velofabrik wishes to permanently work in the field of local and social economy.

The bicycles are designed by cycling enthusiasts who know a good bicycle is necessary to cope with every situation (cobblestones, tramway tracks, steep slopes, professional meetings, cultural events, shopping or take your children safely back home), with the mobility in Brussels and to go for a ride in the Sonian Forest or the Pajottenland.

Our partner is collaborating with the non-profit association “Ateliers de la rue Voot” and the firm of adapted work “TRAVIE” (Anderlecht), and is a member of the S-AWB, the federation of social economy enterprises in French-speaking Belgium.

The volunteers will have the opportunity to discover the sector of social entrepreneurship in Brussels and in Belgium and the associative sector of soft mobility.
